God will not necessarily give us everything we ask for. Often He'll say no.
Like bad events as you mentions. God will allow events to happen - even bad ones. When bad events happen, people naturally turn to Him. He is concerned with each individual soul. If you ask for something that is indeed good, He will give it to you. Some may think that a brand new Mercedes is good, but it's probably not. They will ask for it and not likely receive it. And how would a brand new Mercedes be of benefit to one's soul? It probably wouldn't be in any way. It may even be harmful. So we have to look at what we know is God's will for everyone's lives. For instance, if someone is a drunkard, we know from scripture that this is not a good and healthy thing. So, if we pray and believe and really want and also take steps of faith in the right direction, God will see us through.
God is a personal God, concerned with every heart. In the vein of this discussion, we also know from scripture that homosexuality is not His will. Therefore, if we ask for God's help, believe He can help us and take the necessary steps in the right direction, he will see us through. there are thousand of recovered homosexuals to prove it.
