You Have Got to be Kidding

Quote From: jen0203

I have to say I disagree with James on this I dont think just because your daughter has a mental illness that gives her the right to take over your house. Having a mental illness is not an excuse to drop out of college and decide that she isnt going to do anything but have your husband wait on her. I would tell her to get a job and get out!!

Having a mental illness is not an excuse to drop out of college? Are you kidding me? Mental illnesses can be very disabilitating even when a person doesn't look like they have anything wrong with them. Howard Hughes, the aviation pioneer of the 1940's, in his last years of life didn't even leave his room because he suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Yet, you would of kicked Howard out on his ass and said get a job. I don't think that would of been very helpful given his disorder.

I still find it strange that the mother left the household two years ago and no one seems to think that this behavior is odd?

You know if either of my parents said that to me....the whole "get out part" I'd feel really bad.  I had to leave college college a few years ago myself because of  a)narcolepsy, b) severe social anxiety disorder, c) moderate depression, d) hypothyriodism (hormonal complications that made me VERY sick), and e) a pituitary tumor.  I pretty much HAVE to live with one or the other of my parents because as things stand right now it's not safe for me to live alone with people I don't trust.

Getting a job with these conditions is very difficult.  Right now I'm just trying to get my health back in order so I can at least stay awake more than 3-4 hours at a time, and be alert enough to do a good job at a job.  I DO look for and apply to jobs that I am sure I can do, but right now nothing has panned out.  So try and be a little more sensitive.  We don't all live with our parents because we WANT to. Some of us HAVE to.

Exactly.  Mentally ill or not.  Living with someone who is convincing that they "Can't"  is a miserable thing.  They can, and need to be expected to perform to the best that they can.  I have a relative who is "mental". My foot!  she just learned how to work the system and finds it real neat to be felt sorry for and cared for.  They need a boot.
