AMEN!!

Quote From: cdmcbride

I am the mother of a newly diagnosed first grader.  During the first few days, the school reassured me that they have dealt with type 1 diabetes with many children.  After a month, my six year old was offered candy by the principal, left alone to walk the halls with a blood glucose of 34,  and found out that only 2 out of 10 teachers who directly supervised her even knew that she had diabetes.  I requested some help and they said that they did not get any funding to care for a child with diabetes.  They denied me a Section 504 Plan - and finally I had to threaten a federal lawsuit.  I have found out that this particular school district has gone to court twice before for dicrimination of children with disabilities.

I am happy to fight for schools to get more funding  - however, the school has made themselves the enemy and maybe you should look at the issues from the other side.

Thank You!!! I am the mother of a child with diabetes and he just turned 6. He is type 1 diabetic. He got a full time nurse at school and things are going well so far. I cant believe they let her walk the halls by herself with a BG of 34?!? Why were you denied a section 504 plan? We had an IEP and a section 504 plan done. YOu might also want to let the school cafeteria know about your child as well, the school cafeteria didnt know which kid had diabetes and my son was getting cookies on his lunch tray. Did you call the school superintendent or the Board of Education and request help for your child? We had to do that also. Your child is entitled to a full time nurse. I know what you are going through and how you feel. Our son was diagnosed in November, 2004 . I hope the school your child is going to checks her sugar and also checks her for keytones. She cant participate in P.E. if her sugar is high and she has keytones in her urine. My son had to come home because he had keytones in his urine. It is deadly. I hope the school knows about diabetes and your child does ok. Here is a website you can go to and download ALL of this stuff and keep it in a folder for your child with diabetes. It is very helpful information and you might even want to give a copy of it to the school, letting them know that you know your childs rights. It is: http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/  Download and copy : The Law, Schools, and Your Child with Diabetes. Take notes and document everything that happens at the school pertaining to your childs health. List dates, times etc.. You just might need this one day. Children with special needs usually become targets for DSS. They are worth more money to the system and the state.  Good Luck and if you want to talk about diabetes, I can share with you all that I know. You can e-mail me at jaby7cee@gulftel.com.
