Some here have said that Dr. Phil should just forget about this family. 

I don't think that he should, and I don't believe that he would. 

Any counsellor, therapist, psychologist, etc, should not give up and continue to help as long as necessary.  That is their job.  People come to them, and to Dr. Phil, for help.  If psychologists give up on someone when help could still be offered, then who are people supposed to go to?
