Negative Stereotypes...

Quote From: jab533

Dr. Phil my husband has been a truck driver for as long as we have been married which has been 36 years.  He does not!!! talk like that gentlemen did on your show today.  Not all truck drivers are nasty mouthed some of them are very repectful of all their surroundings and treat everyone like they would want to be treated.  This genltemen is putting some truck drivers in a basket that is not always full.!!!!! One bad apple in the basket spoils the rest of them.!!!!!!!! So maybe this will help him control that NASTY  mouth of his.    Thank you of you see this message Jan Brinkley Va Beach VA
Jan - I completely understand and agree with your point that not all truck drivers curse. It is a terrible stereotype to perpetuate. I *know* they all don't because my hubby, Tim, is the one that other driver's have been telling to tone down his language - he's been told many times by me, other truckers...just about everyone. When we agreed to do the show, we explained to Dr. Phil's producers that it was very important to us that this show not negatively impact the image of truckers already so poorly represented in the media. I think they did a fair and reasonable job of that - which is why we discussed how Tim's behavior played into a negative stereotype that many people could not see past. You are absolutely right when you say that "one bad apple on the basket spoils the rest of them" - People who already think negatively about truckers will only validate their views when confronted someone who has one of those traits. Thankfully, doing the show allowed Tim to see himself from the outside and get a real perspective of how his language reflected not only on him, but on his children, me, his job and even others of his profession. He is an eloquent, well read, and well spoken man when he choses to be. Now this can shine through. I am proud to say that those who have met him since taping the show have been shocked to find out that this was ever an issue for Tim. He has come a long way - he is not perfect (nor am I) but is well on the way to profanity-free. Jan - glad to see you taking a stand for our trucker's reps. Thanks - *Marianne*
