General Advice

Quote From: gardenbug2

Hi,

I'm new to this board.  I'm married and have a 10 yr old son.  Both my son and husband are overweight.  I'm not attempting to ask my husband to lose weight...he will when he's ready, I hope.  I am very concerned about my son who weighs 109#(97 percentile on the weight charts at the doctor's office), and he is very self-concious about his weight.  My son seems to follow in his dad's footsteps when it comes to food.  They both sneak junk when I'm not around.  I don't keep junk in the house.  I constantly read food labels.  I make healthy meals.  Do we have pizza occasionally, sure we do.  I'm not a fanatic.

My son is probably the most active kid on the block.  He's usually outside playing, even in the winter (we live in MN).  I've pretty much banned TV, movies, and computer games.

We don't have weight discussions unless my son initiates them.  I focus on making healthy lifestyle choices, whether it be food, exercise, drugs, etc...so as not to make him feel any worse about his appearance than he already does.  Kids tease him sometimes.

Unfortunately, my husband isn't on board with the "healthy" lifestyle and promoting/enforcing it with my son.  In fact, he often sabatoges any healthy habits that I've instilled (like sneaking out for ice cream before bed or eating when we aren't hungry).  Then, that only puts extra pressure on me to think of another way to help our son lose weight.

I need HELP...does anyone have any advice???

hi, i think simply you need to talk with your husband and discuss how unhealthy and dangerous it is to be overweight at such a young age. you need to decide what is truly best for your son and i think that will be the key to gettin through to him.

Hello, I have a 19.5 year old daughter and a almost 10 year old, who both was born small and gained weight fast as infants, then my 19.5 year kept it until she turned around 15 (@ 10 years old I had to buy her husky boy jeans @ sears to fit her) and she has slimmed down so much now, I think she is to skinny now! She is expecting her 1st baby in Feb. and my 10 year old just kinda dropped it the older she got. I never worried about it, I fixed good meals but never made them do without and we had pretzels, popcorn and such as snacks NO POP!! And I wasn't one much to fix Koolaid either I got them fruit juices don't get me wrong they all 4 have their cookies and milk before bed and still do, even tho 2 are now adults!  But I never ever downed her for her weight (Not saying you do) I didn't want her to have a complex. She was active as a child and teen, but I think sometimes nature has her way of taking her course! If your son has a medical condition that his weight affects then you might want to watch. As far as dad (Let me tell you my girls @ almost 10 & 7 seek snacks too, but I've been trying to give them a few more since I've caught them sneeking and that seems to have helped the sneeking but I give them a snack as soon as they come home from school, then a couple hours later we eat supper and then @ 7 they have their cookies & milk and go to bed @ 8) I'd ask him not to eat junk in front of him (If he is that is!) for that isn't fair and it is hard on ANYONE! So maybe just give it time and see how it goes. Hope this will give you some thoughts, that even tho he is a little on the heavy side now it doesn't mean he'll grow up to be that way.
