Sorry to hear about your bad online dating experience. I know several people that have had a lot of luck with online dating. Of course there are going to be some wackos out there but you can weed through those.
Another thing you might try is single cruises, there are two different types that I know about. If you live near the water many cities have "dinner cruises", you just out on a cruise for an evening around a harbor or bay and have dinner. Everyone on board is single.
I have also had friends that had luck with the single cruises, cruise lines will a 3-5 day cruise around the Caribbean for example and everyone is single.
If you like playing sports, join a rec league in your area, if you like to read, join a book club in your area (one where you actually meet and discuss the book). A lot of book stores host book clubs you can find them on the book stores' web site. If you like watching sports buy season tickets to a local team and it doesn't have to be a professional team it can be single or double A. Usually when you have season tickets, it's season tickets holders that sit around you so you'll see the same people at the game.
