How can a parent help?

Quote From: crazydoll

I think Dr. phil is right. I have been overweight all my life too. I have always had trouble making and keeping friends. As I got older it was harder to get the jobs I wanted. I never had the family support, I was put on different diets, mostly weight watchers, since I was 12 years old. This always gave me a low self esteem, I always felt I was never good enough the way I was. If I came home complaining about someone giving me a hard time about my weight in school. i would be told by my mother 'what do you expect the way you look'.

I was very touched and concerned by your post.  I have an overweight eight year old and I am at a loss about how to help her.  The pediatrician tells me that I have to get her weight under control.  But I worry that if I try to control her eating she will feel the way you did when your parents put you on a diet.  I don't ever want her to feel that she is not good enough but if I don't watch what she eats she is out of control.

How do I enforce healthy eating, help her lose weight and at the same time not kill her self esteem?  Please help a concerned parent.

How much support we have growing up makes a world of a diiference and right here we see what kind of a difference support can bring to a child growing up in their developmental years.  We can either build each other up or not and when we grow up in an environment where we are built up it does make a world of a difference to us coming to learn where to place our values in life.
