Fever

Quote From: willow3

My son has been sick for several days now. The doctor has prescribed medicine, but no matter what I do, I can't get his fever down. Do you all have any suggestions on what I can do to lower his temperature? I am pulling hairs right now trying to figure out what to do.

Depending on how high the fever is you could try doing a few things

If it is above 102.5 take him back to the doctors ASAP

Give him lots of clear fluids, put a cold cloth on the back of his neck, have as little clothes on him as possible.  If he continues to have a fever for more than a couple days call the doctor and get his advice on it. Fevers can get dangerous for little ones.

Good luck :)

Actually fevers rarely cause any permenant damage to anyone it is the illness that causes the fever that is of concern.  A persons body ( child or adult) limits a fever from going over 104.  However with fevers that high there is a risk of fever convulsions that can cause permenant damage.  I find that motrin works better than tylenol.  and just keep sponging when he shivers cover him up but always keep a cold cloth on his head and around his neck.  I always sponge under their arms too as this seems to help How old is your son?.  If you can not get his fever down I would also take him back for a second opinion.

My son was 3 monthes old and we went through this with him.  The pediatrician for the first night told me to put him in a cool bath.  But when that didn't work my grandmother told me to use a rag with rubbing alcohol on it -- you just have to watch and not do it very often because it can bring his temp down to far.  They then put him in the hospital and still couldn't figure out what was wrong.  Have them check him for a virus known as the rotovirus it is in the intestines and causes high fevers and makes the child very sick.

Hope this helps alittle -- they also say rotate between tylenol and motrin but double check with your doctor first.
