I too, have a son who is 10 years old. He started having trouble listening in pre-school. He was misdiagnosed with ADD at first. My mother, aunt, grandmother and sister have BPD. We basically had an idea that he was Bipolar. Three different psychiatrists agreed with the diagnosis. He too was put on Concerta, which only increased his rages. He also had severe trouble sleeping, staying up sometimes until 1am. He has trouble sleeping alone, which has taken a toll on our marriage.
We had a discussion with his Psychiatrist and therapist and recently decided to take him off the ADHD medicine. He has shown an extreme improvement. He is now on Seroquel,600mg, an anti-psychotic medicine, to help with the anxiety & suicidal thoughts, Lithium, a mood stabilizer, 625mg, and Depakote, a combination mood stabilizer 1000mg. He has been doing great. His sleep up until a week ago was a problem. His psychiatrist put him on Clonidine 10mg for sleep. It is magical. He takes it an hour before he goes to bed and sleeps all night. He is not even groggy in the morning. I wish you lots of luck in your battle. It is not always easy, but it is definitely getting better on a daily basis. I have also learned to choose my battles. We set lots of limits, work really hard on self control, and stick together as parents. You also have to find time for yourself, which has been the hardest part of the battle. If you are stressed out and not well, it makes it all so much tougher to deal with. God bless you and if you ever need to talk, please e-mail me at csoares73@yahoo.com. I don't care if my e-mail address is seen by others. If we can help each other through a tough time, that it makes life so much more pleasant for all of us!!!
