see a sleep specialist

Quote From: newsam1286

I am 66 years old.  I work part time at a job that I really like.  My problem is I am taking 2 xanax every night to go to sleep.  When I get home from work I seem to sleep the rest of the day.  I  feel like a sluggard and it is all my fault because I obviously must be plain lazy.  i feel so guilty I just hid this note from my husband. Could this problem be because of the xanax.

thanks for any help you can give me.

I saw a sleep specialist last year, finally, after years of being so sleepy during the day that I could hardly keep my eyes open.  I had to sleep a lot just so I could stay awake to drive, or help the kids with their homework.  I have Narcolepsy (I've posted here previously, so I won't give you the long version of my story.)  I felt so ashamed and lazy.  I tried to hide it from my husband and everybody else.  I finally talked about it with my doctor.  She referred me to a sleep specialist, who did a nighttime and daytime sleep study.  I am now on Provigil and life is much better.  Hope you can get some help.

I don't have any experience with Xanex, but I have heard that anti-anxiety drugs make people sleepy.  I wouldn't stop taking it though until you check with your doctor.  I have anxiety issues, and you shouldn't be without your meds.  I'll pray for you.

I complained to my doctor about never getting enough sleep. She told me to stop drinking  coffee. I switched to decaf and it did not help. I still can not sleep. My doctor acted as if it was not a problem. She did nothing for me.

I take an over the counter sleep med. for many years. I have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. I get up at 530 am and never go back to bed until about 11 pm.  Most nights I get less than 5 hours.

Try to wean yourself off the Xanex because I know that is definately the problem. Try  talking to your doctor about getting perscribed a non- habit forming sleep aid that doesnt make you feel groggy and sluggish the next day. In my past experiences, Xanex always made me feel half asleep the day after I took it.
