10/19 Teacher Caught in the Act

Quote From: ramair

Let's not forget that Janelle was, by her own admission,  raised in a "Christian" home and taught to save herself for marriage. If she's only 15, emotionally, so what? That's still old enough to know better. Especially when she'd been taught, all her life, that any sex outside of marriage is wrong.

I wonder why that would even be part of her defense, that seems to be more damaging to her case.  Because if you are raised in a christian home, especially a fundamental christian home, you are taught very strict rules about what is wrong and what is right.  I agree it doesn't matter if she is emotionally 15, she still does know right from wrong.

"Saving oneself" is not always a guarantee that one's first sexual encounter will be that perfect, morally "legitimate" scenario that religious groups try to impose on everyone.  And knowing right from wrong doesn't always mean doing it.  People are weak, they are often driven by impulses contrary to their own nature and upbringing. This is why things such as addiction exist.  I tend to believe that if you treat someone like a criminal you will help them become one.  On the other hand if you allow people the opportunity to redeem themselves and become better people they will.
