11/24 Great School Debate

Quote From: our4sons

But could you pass the test yourself? Not to be contrary, just an honest question.

Teachers are held to a higher standard and rightfully so IMO. We are placing them in charge of our most precious, our innocent children. My question is why is it better to remove a child from school because the teachers "don't know enough" only to place them in a similar situation at home? yes, some parents really are better educators than the professionals in their area. That is not true of everyone though.

It's is good for your children that you have such a set up, which essentially is doing what a school already does just with a different classroom. Not all have access to such things & not all have the abilities to do it either.

Personally, I believe the NEA has a lot to do with why there are so many poorly educated teachers in the system. That needs to be addressed.

My mother was a school teacher for public school.  She told me that the job of a highschool teacher and the job of a homeschool "teacher" are two entirely different things.  She says the importance of a good elementary school teacher is not necessarily to be an "expert in your field" (I passed grade 7 with flying colors for example), it's to know how to impart that information effectively to a large group of young strangers and acquaintances.  A great deal of her learning how to become a teacher was not about re-learning grade 5 (grin), it was about how to "be a teacher".

She says this is obviously different from imparting that same info to someone you've nursed since birth, because you do it in different ways that are more applicable to them.

A teacher does not need to be an expert in something to prompt a student to learn it.  Example from my own childhood.  The math teacher went on maternity leave, and they couldn't find a replacement, so they offered that job also to the music teacher, who was good at math but not an "expert".  He managed to teach the students math just fine.

Most of our teachers cannot even pass the 10th grade MCAS, the test they teach to, let alone the new educator test.  I would pass it without question (I have seen it).  I would probably barely pass the advanced math portion, but again - that is why my engineer husband teaches the math at home. :)

I can do and teach the Algebra, but when we get to Calculus and Trig - well, they just aren't my comfort zones.  But I know myself well enough to recognize that and take appropriate steps to ensure my child obtains that knowledge - whether it be through tutoring or college classes (homeschoolers can send their 16-year-old plus children to community colleges for coursework here).

ITA with you about the NEA.

I dont' want an arbitrary teacher 'in charge' of my children.  I've met a few teachers, and while I'm sure they're competent at what they do (teach) their attitudes and disrespectfulness to  children.

The whole system is geared towards disrespect for our children, who are our future.
