sleep study

Quote From: brookew

I have a sleeping problem... I cant go to sleep for at least 2 hrs after I lay down. Then when I get to sleep I wake up at least 2 or 3 times. I dont eat after 9. When its morning i am so exhausted I cant hardly get up... Any suggestions??? I have taken Lunesta at the strongest dose but that worked to make me sleep but only for a couple hours. Now it doesnt make me sleepy. Just kinda hyper actually....Need some advice. this has went on for about 2/3 yrs...tired

There are over 200 sleep disorders out there that can disrupt sleep and make you tired during the day.  Ask your family doc for a referral to a sleep specialist.

I have Narcolepsy, for which Provigil works very well.  My oldest son also has Narcolepsy.  My husband has Restless Leg Syndrome and Sleep Apnea, and our two younger boys both have Restless Leg Syndrome.

I have already left detailed messages on this board about our family's sleep issues, if you care to page back and read them....Becky

You sound like me... Unfortunately, I don't really  have answers.  My doctor suggested a sleep study, but when I found out how much it cost, I turned it down.

However, I recently started on Strattera, which is a non-stimulant for ADD, and it has worked miracles.  It still takes me roughly an hour to fall asleep, I still wake up about 2 times a night, but that's compared to taking roughly 2 horus to fall asleep and waking up more than 2 times a night, and I feel that the sleep I get is much sounder.  I also feel more relaxed the whole time I am lying in bed, trying to fall asleep.

But the big difference is that I have daytime energy, which I never used to have, even when a sleep aid worked (over the counter sleep aids had no effect, Trazodone kept me up all night, and amitryptaline worked somewhat.)  I still don't have near as much energy as my 52-year old mom, but still, it's amazing to reach 8 pm and still be able to concentrate.

However, my body has a high tolerance for drugs, and after 2 months on 80 mg of Strattera, it stopped working, so I upped the dosage to 100 mg, but am wary that I will grow tolerant of it again soon....

I've had my insomnia/fatigue for well over ten years, the first time I saw a doctor (in high school), she thought I was depressed; I didn't see one again about it till about a year ago; she too thought I might be depressed and recommended me to a psychologist, who didn't really think I was depressed, but couldn't figure anything else out, I brought up that I may be ADD, though I don't have too many of those symptoms either.

Once again, Strattera has been a mini life-saver, although I don't know how long it'll work, and I still wish that one day I could have the energy of a 27-year old--or wake up feeling refreshed.  I've never woken up and felt well-rested, but I heard that that's possible!

So that's my suggestion, and I welcome any others!  I don't have the symptoms of sleep apnea (no snoring or waking up feeling out of breath), and as exhausted as I get, I cannot fall asleep during the day, so it's not narcolepsy...
