Holiday blues

Quote From: gwarrior6

I'm not a scrooge or anything.  I've never really had a tragedy at christmas time.  I just can't seem to get into it.  I believe in Christ and everything, I just feel numb about the whole thing.  I am not excited about the decorations, the food, family or gifts.  It just seems like i'm going thru the motions and can't get out of the rut.
I know what you mean. I used to feel the same way. One year a friend of mine invited me to join their "Angle tree" You pick a person or family and get things on their list..whatever you can afford. The best part was taking the gifts to the families. It was amazing to watch the faces of these families. I've done it every year since. Trust me, do this once and it will get you in the Holiday mood. Hope this helps.

I feel the same sometimes

I know the feeling.  It takes me a while to get into the spirit.  This year took a long time for me because I live in Southern California and the weather was warm and sunny until a short while ago.  And I love summer, fall too, so it's like, "hey, I'm not ready yet."

I think  you could try to find new things about the season to interest you and get you out of your rut.  Especially if you are a single person.  When you find something that warms your heart at Christmastime you will know and want to do it again.  And that helps.

For me it was a combination of things.  First, I discovered an area theme park had a good country style Christ centered celebration and I tried it several years ago.  I worked in retail at the time, so going to this place and having such a change of pace (with amazingly less crowds) put me in the Christmas spirit.  Which is sometimes hard to do for a retail employee!  I visit this place each year now.  In fact, I just went there four days ago.  It has changed a bit over the years, but it never fails to put me into the spirit.  I think that is because it is something I personally chose as pleasing to me, not something that is an expected tradition.

I have also found that staying away from large malls as much as possible and visiting small gift stores also helps me.  When I worked in retail I developed the habit of trying to have most of my shopping done before Thanksgiving.  Including stocking up on household needs.  Who needs the crowds and hassle!

Over the years I found that if I make a point to go to church during Advent (I am a Catholic Christian) the season is more meaningful to me.  I have gone from believing in Christmas time to believing in Advent.  I know that I don't have to have the Christmas spirit, per se, because Christmas is a day that I am preparing for spiritually and physically.  An Advent song called People Look East says, "Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table."  The song makes it clear that we are preparing for the "guest" on Christmas Day.  So, I try to keep in mind that I am just preparing to have a good, holy, and happy day. (Well, two days in my family.)  Not a fantasticly wonderful day or entire season full of magical feelings.  This keeps it simple in my mind.    I offer to help with Mass during Advent and that involvement brings me into the spirit of the season.

You will find the special things for you that will help you feel that Christmas feeling again.  Best thing to do is look first at the things that don't excite you that you have been doing and just do them in a different way or drop them.

Sorry. It happens. Have you tried midnight mass... that's always pretty. How about helping at a mission? Or just hibernating till you feel more like celebrating. Unless you just want to be in a rut for now... and that's OK too. If it continues seek an Elf intervention.
