01/09 False Confessions

Quote From: willnoah

i agree tis does happen, but i am concerned that there was no mention of all the good work law enforcement does...i n this day and age, it is always someone else's fault and the police are out to get everyone...i totally respect our law enforcement officials and if the evidence does not fit the confession, then the victim is vindicated...
how can you make mention of "all the good work law enforcement does" when they in fact violate someone's rights? i agree that there are some who enforce the law, but a good many violate it and our rights, and i believe they should be punished for as much as the law allows!!!!!

This is because of the level of trust required.

This is because of the level of trust required.  If we had three or four bankers draining people's accounts, the focus would be on the cheats, rather than the thousands of honest bankers.

But there is another problem.  Groups are generally ineffective at policing themselves.  As there is no external entity to police the police, corruption has the ability to fester.  Even if 99.9 percent of policemen are honest, they will still look the other way when one of their own does wrong.  It's not unlike a large family.  Almost no one is going to "rat out" their brother.

I agree that it is proper to point out the many tremendous police officers in this country.  I certainly have the highest respect for them.  I wish they always got things right just as I wish there were no bad policemen.  Unfortunately I too have seen direct evidence of misconduct by investigators.  I know this is a small minority of them, but when you deal with matters such as this, it only takes a few to create a horrible problem.
