The Skinny

Quote From: sunshine303

I am 5'7' and weigh between 105-110, and i am 27 years old.  I am actually trying to gain weight and always have been.  I DO NOT like being skinny.  Although yesterday i went to the doctor and told him i would like to gain weight, he looked at me funny.   I don't see myself about to die, and how could your dr. tell you that you are going to die soon at 107 lbs?  I am just wondering???????????????

The poster your responded to did not mention her height (or at least I didn't see it).  That may be part of it.  He may have been concerned enough to try to scare her with his choice of words.

I know about your problem all too well.  I'm 6' tall and until I was 30 I weighed 129 lbs.  I tried everything, but just couldn't gain weight.  In those days, there was nothing around for weight gain.  Now there are dietary supplements and other things.  I know the feeling when you ask for help gaining weight and they give you that blank stare like you're out of your mind.  Like me, you probably have a faster than normal metabolism.  I know it's hard to see now, but it will get better.   Good luck.

According to your BMI, youre underweight (16.8).  Get a second opinion.  Also, it depends on your height and skeletal structure.  I'd imagine that you have a very small frame?  At 5 ft 7", the typical wt range is 122-149 lbs.  It pertains to someone with a medium build.  There's also metabolism to boot-yours might be very high.

Being severely underweight through starvation can seriously deplete your heart of electrolytes that stimulate the electrical charge to keep it beating.  When this happens, your heart fails as a pump, you can't get oxygen to your brain and vital organs and you die.  Again, this may not be a problem for you, I don't think you starve yourself at all.  Some people just need more fuel to keep themselves alive, so a person with a larger build and slower metabolism may need more nutrients at 5 ft 7" than you do to keep their bodies from failing.
