Scary Thought

Quote From: ohdang13

I have read "The Long Walk" also. And I agree with what you are saying.  The t.v. has become the new Roman arena.  But the truth of the matter is, these kinds of things have been going on since the dawn of man.

I am currently reading a book by Colin Wilson called "The Giant Book of True Crime."  This book goes back to the earliest records from all over the world and talks about violence , motives and how truley sick people were even back before the Roman Era.  The book also covers the topic of what people from the earliest records to present day find to be the most entertaining.  You may find this book to be rather enlightening.

Perhaps it goes to show that there's really nothing (OK, not much) new under the sun. People are still mesmerized and entertained by the bizarre and gruesome, much as they were in the Roman Colisseum. Even though we want to think of ourselves as sooo much more "civilized," things that appeal to our baser natures do catch and hold our attention.

I read that book too!  It's facinating to me to read about people who have done horrendous things to others, which makes me wonder about my own thought process.  If I enjoy reading that stuff that is.  I could never hurt anyone else, or myself, for any reason!  Cutting off an appendage for fame?  There's something wrong with those people.

I must borrow that from a friend of mine, she told me she would lend it to me after I mentioned it to her, sounds like a good one.

Through the ages, there was nothing like a Christian being torn apart by a lion ( among other things ), or a couple of gladiators shredding each other ( parallels with WWE only without the blood and death) to entertain the masses.  And a Saturday afternoon, take the kids to see a public execution, whether it was a " Witch" being burned at the stake, or a public hanging, these things happened, for those who don't belive it.

I think what bothers me the most, is we are on a slippery slope toward the same forms of entertainment (how many out there would like to see a public execution of someone, I am sure there are a few whether they care to admit it or not ) our children and teens EMULATE this stuff ( how many parents have seen the Jackass or Bumfights videos ? Bet many of your teens have, but they aren't going to tell you about it )  this guy losing his virginity on TV, half of North America will be tuned in, Sex is another form of entertainment otherwise there would be no need for the XXX ratings, no demand, no supply.

So now that Fear Factor and Survivor have lost their edge in the "Reality TV" saturated networks, it should scare people to think what they will come up with next to get your viewing, and to keep up their ratings.
