Didn't hear this one

Quote From: ohdang13

Have you seen the news today?  A man in England hanged himself LIVE over an internet chat room!  And the people who were watching the live feed were egging him on to do it! CNN showed some of the things that people were saying to him. I could not believe what I was reading and hearing. People were calling him a whimp and others said that he was not hanging himself fast enough.

There is an investigation going on right now over this issue. The people who were egging this suicide on may be held partly responsible for this mans death.

How could anyone just sit back and watch someone end their own life???????  And to add insult to injury...they taunt this man while he is obviously crying out for some kind of help and attention.

This is just truely sad and disturbing to me that sooo many people in the world have no value of a human life!!  I can not begin to imagine what this mans poor family is going through. It must be hard enough to lose someone through a suicide, but to then find out that thousands of people were a witness to this and did NOTHING to try and stop him.

I find it very sad that humans are the most intelligent of things on this planet and we are also the most savage of any animal to have ever walked the face of this Earth.  Even the Lion or Tiger are not this cruel to their own kind. It is no wonder soooo many people have become depressed and lack self-esteem...if this is considered good entertainment then I for one, WANT NO PART OF THIS!

I think I am still in shock over this whole story and still having a hard time believing what I just watched.

How sad.  You ask how anyone can just sit back and watch someone commit suicide?  What about people who are going to jump from buildings or bridges, and someone always get the people shouting for the person to jump?  What about a few years back when some guy was killing some woman, and its been so long, I can't remember the details, but he was either forcing her to jump off the bridge, or he was pushing her off the bridge or just killing her on the bridge, but the spectacle stopped traffic and people were watching it and not doing anything about it.  Now, that was sad.  I don't know what I would do if I saw such a thing, but I would like to think that I would maybe do something, however little to try to stop it.   I don't know.  I guess it would depend if there was a weapon or not.  But, yes, we live in a very violent, cruel and savage society.  I begrudgingly have to say it human nature.

I think I am still in shock over this whole story and still having a hard time believing what I just watched.

I have been chatting online through various chat protocols since 1997.  I have to tell you that it happens often in a chat-type setting that someone will threaten suicide.  I used to try to help them.  I would stay up all night trying to talk them down from proverbial ledges, only to have them sign off in the middle of the conversation.  In those early years, I can't tell you how many times I cried, thinking that the person I had been chatting with had just committed suicide.  But the person would log in again the next day or a few days later.

I would like to think that if I were watching the man threatening to hang himself, I would still try to talk to him or get him help.  I know for sure that I wouldn't taunt him or encourage him to kill himself, but I honestly can't say for sure whether or not I'd let myself get emotionally involved enough to take action to try to save him.  After so many wolf cries over the years, it's better for my own self-preservation to do nothing.  Isn't that awful?

The story you mentioned is heart-breaking and sickening.  It's too bad that no one could or would do anything to help him... I don't know.  Maybe we should all get off-line and get back to the kind of interactions which can truly show us the value of human life.  When was the last time most of us mailed a letter instead of just typing and clicking 'send' on an email?  When was the last time most of us introduced ourselves to someone interesting on the street or in a store the way we do on websites like MySpace?  When did we become so afraid of putting ourselves out there as 3-dimensional people instead of 2-dimensional text on a computer screen?

OMG, you're kidding right ? That is sick, anyone egging him on is sicker than that man ever was, though it shouldn't really surprise any of us, my BIL couldn't wait to show us a prisoner being beheaded, yup I said BEHEADED that was all over the net, I had nightmares for a week.

We have the NERVE to call ourselves civilized, and yet we kill for greed, entertainment and we are more willing to stop and stare at a car wreck than we are to help, you're right, Lions and Tigers are not that cruel, they kill to eat, not for fun (yes Male lions will kill a cub thats not theirs when they take over a pride ).

Did you see the irony in the fact we are more likely to keep to ourselves and not know our neighbors, or speak to anyone on the street, and yet people are desparatly searching for fame in any venue they can ?

Sorry if I 'm not making a lot of sense, its six thirty am, and I just had only one sip of my coffee.
