Cathryne,

Hello! Thank you for posting your comments. I do agree. It appears to me Alison was obese in the photograph that was displayed before she was pregnant,  I feel if she would have been a smaller size 6 , adopted a healthier lifestyle eating natural foods containing no chemicals,  and been in top physical shape before she got pregnant , the symptoms would not have been as extreme.

My physician "female" told me in her office (She's in Columbia , SC and has a large practice. She's the VP of the School of medicine at usc also) the growing trend today is woman having babies over 40.  As a noticeable pattern she See's and has contact with on a day to day basis, the woman who are in top shape physically, smaller size 6 and have chosen to adapted a healthier life styles by eating natural foods before they get pregnant and maintain that pattern during it are the woman 9 .5 times out of 10 who don't have or have a small amount of problems or complications during their pregnancy.

I was 27 years old when I became pregnant for the first time.  I was size 6.  I ate healthy.  I was in top shape.  I ate mainly natural foods.  I STILL HAD SEVERE HYPEREMESIS!!!!!!!   Why are you trying to blame this woman???   It is a rare, but  PROVEN, disease!   She didn't do anything wrong.  Did you listen to the explanation of what it does to the mother???  The symptoms were extreme because she had HYPEREMESIS!!!!!!   Just because you may not have known someone personally with it, please do not attack those of us who have had it.  Please read the hundreds of stories on this message board so that you will understand that comments like this are very hurtful.   How would you like for someone to take the worst part of your life and make a secondhand comment blaming you for it when you had no control?

Oh PLEASE.  You have no idea what you're talking about!  I was a size 2 when I got pregnant.  5' 2", 125 pounds, very low body fat percentage, almost all muscle.   Kayak guide, avid skiier on black diamonds, former triathelete, and collegiate swimmer.  I was in the best shape of my life and incredibly healthy.  I'd never had motion sickness or any disease.  Yet I had severe HG, lost all my muscle, and spent 3 months unable to get out of bed.

It is not a woman's fault that she gets HG.  It has nothing to do with her size or her even her diet according to studies so far.  In fact one study in Sweden showed that a high fat versus a lower fat diet only led to a very slight increase in HG occuring.

Also, HG is FAR more common with YOUNG women than older women.  They were actually shocked that I had HG for the first time at 38.

Thank you for bringing up another myth.  Hopefully more shows like this will clear up the lack of education and the faulty perceptions  of people like you who aren't familiar with the disease.

Patrice,

I would like yourself and your physician (if one could call her that) to starve yourselves for five months without  a drop of water and repeatedly make yourselves vomit seventy times  a day.  I would like all your hair to fall out and huge bleeding ulcers grow on your esophagus.  Then I would like you to write us all back and give us  you and your "physicians" advice about prepregnancy health.  One of the main reasons women with hyperemesis feel isolated and depressed during their pregnancies is because of women like you and doctors like yours.  I feel pity for you and anyone who sees your "doctor".

 That's a myth.

I was 30 years old, 5'1 and 110 lbs. when I got pregnant.  I was physically fit (took martial arts),  ate well, and generally took good care of myself.  Then I got HG and had to call my husband to lift a 12 lb. cat off my lap when I had to go to the bathroom.  Adopting a healthier lifestyle is always a good thing, but in the case of HG, a woman's pre-pregnancy condition seems to have no correlation to whether or not she'll get HG.  Unfortunately, HG doesn't seem to be one of those "adopt a healthier lifestyle" kind of illnesses.  Admittedly, we don't know much about what causes HG in otherwise normal and healthy women.  Scientists have only recently begun studying it's effects, both long and short term.  Prior to modern day medicine (that's chemical soups not whole grain soups) women just died from it and it got lumped into the consumption/ wasting sickness/ hysteria/ frail-inferior-women category of illnesses.

Please read some of the HG stories that have been posted here.  They might give you some perspective on the how broad the spectrum really is of women who are afflicted with HG.

You stated that your physician does not see a problem 9.5 out of 10 times.  That means out of 100 women, that 5 of them will have problems even if they are healthy.  That's 5% of her patients, with the national average being between 1 and 2 % suffer from HG.

I do agree that a healthy eating, sleeping and physical exercise, that the likelyhood of complications is less but that does not mean that  it does not happen to healthy people.

I wonder what your physician friend would say to your  comment??
