What is
Quote From: charmed20023I think that the idea of having children who are uneducated is horriable and I think that only teaching abstinance is a really bad idea. I cant tell you how many friends I had who got pregnant in high school because they didnt know anything except abstinance. I have no problem with teaching abstinance as long as you teach protection too. It just irritates me so much that these parents think that the only way to show their children love is to keep them uninformed, to me I think you show your children love by giving them knowledge As an abstinence educator of a nationally
recognizedcurriculum,I'm afraid that most of society does not
understand what aneffectiveabstinence curriculum is really made
of. When I hear"abstinence"mentioned, it's as though many people
think that otheroptions of STDand pregnancy prevention are not
addressed. In thisday and age,for those who receive federal
funding, it is mandated (andrightly so)that such options be included in
the curriculum. Themajordifference is that abstinence mentioned
as the only 100% way toavoidundesireable consequences and students are
given the real lifefailurerates (not laboratory rates!) of condoms
andvariouscontraceptives. TRUE abstinence education does
educateabout"other" options, it just emphasizes that they are
not100%effective. TRUE abstinence education also talks
throughtheprocess of what options youth face when they do become
pregnantorinfected with an STI/STD. If folks were more aware
ofhowbecoming sexually active as a child affects the rest of
ourentirelives, more folks would support the notion of purity balls
orwhateverother loving methods created to encourage our youth
toabstain. We can't make those decisions for them, but we can
makeall the effortswe can to encourage them toward behavior that
benefitsthem most and bethere for them even if they decide differently.
