My son has only been diagnosed by one psychiatrist for ADHD and although I agree with him that my son is ADHD, I have scheduled a 3 hour ADHD testing so I can be sure. He is not on any medication yet...it is such a huge decision on a parents part to put children on a daily dose of any medication...especially one that works on the neurotransmitters in the brain as does Strattera.
Thank you again for your thoughts
Your friend is probably meaning well, trying to give you helpful advice, etc., however, I agree with you in this situation, I wouldn’t have my child apologize to the man, either. My advice to you is to use this as a learning experience with your child. Go over the event with him, step by step, and ask him to think about what he could have done or said differently, to think about what actions he could have taken to change the outcome of the situation. At age 9, he can learn how to control his behavior at least by walking away.
Having your son have the extensive testing for ADHD is the best thing to do for him. If he does need medication, there is no shame in that. Please know that although ADHD could contribute to your son’s lack of self discipline, be careful not to use it as an excuse, especially in front of him; because he may come to believe he has a ‘free pass’ to misbehave.
