05/14 The Dr. Phil House: "Make My Kid a Star"

Quote From: memphisone

Just let me say. The way Dr. Phil and these mom's go about the child actor business is not reality.  My daughter is a working child actor. She is a regular kid. Does regular things. Church, Sports, school, local theatre as well as Oscar movies.

Dr. Phil has on the EXTREME. This is what sells.

It saddens the child acting community he perpetuates this myth about how this world really is, or isn't. He is in his own reality. NOT OURS. Why not have real actors and their parents on? First most won't, second no one would care how boring it really can be.

Very few parents coach their acting kids. Heck I can't coach mine to put her dishes in the dishwasher.

Acting is not a competition against other kids. It's against the role. If you are African American and they want Asian then it's not your role.  Our kids aren't better than anyone else. Yes talented but NOT Better! Not ever.

You do not have to spend every dollar, every minute, thinking about this business. Life goes on, with or without acting.  Go into an audition looking hungry and you have already lost.

Thanks.

You are exactly right,

If the "Normal everday stage parents " were being featured, then there wouldn't be a show, because it would be pretty boring, I think you might agree there.

There is absolutly NOTHING wrong with encouraging your child's dreams and aspirations, BUT, it becomes a problem when they become the PARENt"S dreams and aspirations, my 15 year old and his friends at the moment want to be Rock Stars, will it happen ? Good question, but his education comes first, and I buy earplugs hehe, he's currently saving for half the price of a new Bass guitar, he also LOVES the stage and acting, but no he dosen't have an agent and we aren't running around to auditions, but he's a kid. Next year he migh want to be an astronaut, and I'm not about to move to Florida to be closer to NASA, though in the winter it might not be a bad idea.

And you are right about the coaching, most of us who have children into acting or music have PROFESSIONALS coaching and teaching our kids, like you mine can't be coached to pick up their dishes.

But its BALANCE, I do NOT eat, breathe and sleep my son's dreams, and neither does he, he does have outside interests and friends and he is NO BETTER than anyone else's child, he just has different talents.

I agree that the most child actors are regular kids.  However, the acting world is a world of its own and not  life for the average kid.  Nothing wrong with that,  just know it is not the average life style.  The competition is against the role, OK..  I understand some kids act  for maybe one role, grow up and enter other careers.  Some child actors grow up and don't know how to be an adult.

The moms on the show are extreme but that is why they are on the show in the first place.  I would hope that other parents would learn from the show so they would make better decisions about what is best for them.

Let me just say that from what I see on this show, you are one of only a few mothers who look at their child being in show business this way. I think most of these mom are not helping their children reach THEIR dreams, but are trying to live their dreams through their children. That is SOOOOOOO sad!! I don't know that I think Dr. Phil was being just extreme, this mothers knew what they were getting into when they agreed to be on this show. Their true selves came out, not the self they wanted us to see. I don't have any kids yet, but when I do I will NEVER be like these mothers!!

This is reality.  There ARE moms and dads like this.  Bravo had a whole series on them.  Sports ones too.  It's really quite disturbing.

You are not looking at the whole picture. Not once did he say that the children were not doing nrmal things , what he was showing is the extreme way some mothers push their past onto the chidren.

I taught school for three years and I had a parent tell me that her daughter does not try in school because she knows that she can make it as a star. Then I had a young man who was model and his parents was not scared to pull him from a shoot if his grades do not measure up.

What I'm trying to say is you may not do these things but there are some that do. You may feel that few people coach their children , but we know from Logan , Barrymore and sheilds that parents do try to coach their own children . A lot of these type of parntes feel that children are better than other children, but not to good that the parent can't abuse them verbally .Just face it some parents spend the family last dime on that so called special child.

Thanks ,

Facing facts

So, I have 3 extremely talented children in the areas of music and dance and not one of them is interested in showbiz or becoming a star. The comment I chose to quote here is perfect. A normal down to earth family with a highly talented child actor. To you, great job!

Now, re: the freaks on the Dr Phil house.....OMG!!!!!  Perhaps if these mothers shut up and give the kids a moment to concentrate and learn the dance it wouldn't have gone so poorly for so many of the kids. Gracie's mom was the only one I saw that didn't spend more time arguing, and yelling about having a "good / positive attitude" LOL....than giving the children a chance to learn the dance. The 2 mother's (yellow shirt and the cusser) really need to back off. I'd like to see them do the same thing, learn this dance in a very short amount of time with someone yelling and arguing with them. So, to these mothers.......GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF!!!!   DANG.

Obsessive mothers are just like what we see on TV!  I've had my daughters in cheerleading and they act just like that because they want there kids to be perfect and they forget the real reason, which is to have fun!

It is a reality...maybe not for a lot of kids, but it does exist and it is pathetic!  It's good that your  daughter has a balance in with her acting work; however, if you look at a lot of this child stars (as adults today!) as noted by the other writers message, those kids are struggling and it shows in how they are living their life now!

It is a reality!!!

Ok, But I beleive there are many moms that do go to the extreme to make there children a star. Dr. Phil is not the only talk show host to show them. I think some of the moms are alot more rediculas than others, but I believe thats how they are and there kids will be damaged because of that. I think Gracies mom and gracie are the best out of the house. I dont see them bragging or bringing anyone else down. They are using there money to pay rent on a apartment! Anyway, my point is that even though you dont treat your daughter or her career like these other moms, doesnt mean they dont!

I don't know how many parents coach their acting kids, but the world is full of parents pushing their children to be what they dreamed of being and never were.  I am a mom of two teenage girls who twirl baton in competitions.  This year I decided to forbid them to be in any competitions other than local competitions.  Why?  Because I am sick to death of the moms who dote on their girls and have forgotten what really matters in life.  According to these moms, their children don't have to be happy.  They just have to be winners that make their moms look proud.  This, unfortunately, is reality.  As far as real actors go, you can't really believe that children are motivated on their own without a great deal of time and energy coming from the parents.  I am sure there are plenty of actors that will tell you they were pushed by obsessive parents.  Perhaps you are overly sensitive since you are the parent of a working child actor and are blinded toward the sad truth.
