I think that's why Dr. Phil had them take lie detector tests. He was forcing them cognitively/mentally to admit the lies they were telling themselves.
He put questions several different ways. Then he addressed their answers and showed them pictures. Their protests were worn down by questions they tripped themselves up in answering. " 1. Well, the cameras were turned off at night" right after absolutely denying the cameras were used at all. That was one lie. 2. "The box wasn't a box " was the answer to another question but "the boy couldn't get out of it by himself "was the answer to another.
Dr. Phil was absolutely brilliant. He kept asking and kept asking and even showed the pictures -
like the interview with the grandmother: she said there was no "deadbolt" then Dr. Phil showed her the picture of the bolt and she stopped - for a minute - and then got silent. He asked her to name what it was if it were not a deadbolt and said to her that a lock was a lock which meant the child couldn't get out.
THAT WHOLE FAMILY WAS IN SUCH DEEP DENIAL BECAUSE THAT WAS THE ONLY WAY THAT COULD HAPPEN DAY AFTER DAY AND YEAR AFTER YEAR.
Maybe the program should have been called THE POWER OF DENIAL.
