07/11 What’s Up, Doc?

Quote From: kendra1820

I don't feel sorry for the parents. It is their fault that these children are like this. These boys have been abused in some form. Either physical or mental. How awful for these children.

No, the boys may not have been abused and it may not be the parents fault.  Google Encopresis - it may be the result of a medical issue.  And yes, it can be awful for the children because the public thinks of them as "disgusting" or "mal-adjusted" or "mentally handicapped".  People do not want their children around these "disgusting" kids - as evidenced by one other post on this topic.

My son, age 11, is not  "disgusting", "mal-adjusted" or "mentally handicapped".  He is a charming, funny, outgoing and extremely intelligent boy.  And he has encopresis.  He is not what most would call potty trained but it isn't for lack of trying.  We have both cried over this thousands of time. He is seen by a pediatrician and we manage it.  I homeschool him because of the lack of understanding in the school system.  Because of homeschooling he has not had the ridicule that other children with this illness have had - and believe me, it is way more common than most would believe. As a result, my son does not have the poor self-esteem to the same extent as some others.  We have tried very hard to educate people without putting my son in the limelight.  Please educate yourselves on encopresis before you judge these children.  It is a heartbreaking illness that no parent or child afflicted with it dares talk about.

I am a say at home mom of four elementary aged boys,  two of whom have or have had problems with encopresis.  All of my boys are very bright kids who have friends, participate in extra-curricular activities, enjoy family vacations, etc.  My husband and I both are educated (I am an ex teacher) totally involved parents.  BEFORE YOU JUDGE THESE BOYS AND THEIR FAMILIES TAKE THIS AS an opportunity to learn about this MEDICAL condition and think a little harder before you SCREAM ABUSE!!!!   I hope all my boys stay away from people with shallow opinions such as yours!!!!

My son has this disorder and it did not come to light until he was 6, he was potty trained and it went normal until then.  It is not as severe as the boys on the show, he has pretty good control of it at 10 but the symptoms are still there.  I have taken my son to the best childrens hospitals and phycatrists to help him get through this.

I can assure you, my children have never been abused and are very happy children.

If a child has has cancer or diabetes does that mean they were abused?  This problem is a medical condition.

LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING

MY SON JUST TURNED 10 AND HE ALSO SUFFERS FROM THIS. I LOVE MY SON VERY MUCH. MY CHILDREN ARE MY WORLD I TRIED FOR YEARS TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH HIM. I TOOK HIM TO SEVERAL DOCTORS. NONE COULD HELP ME.THEY DID NOT EVEN SEND HIM TO A SPECIALEST.  I TOOK IT UPON MYSELF TO FIND A SPECIALIST IN THIS AREA. I HAVE EVEN QUIT MY JOB SO I CAN DEVOTE ALL MY TIME TO MY SON TO HELP FIX THIS AND THE POSSABILITY THAT HE MAY HAVE DYSLEXIA. HOW DARE YOU JUDGE PEOPLE FOR COMMING OUT IN THE OPEN TO SPEAK ABOUT SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE JUST HIDE. MY SON IS A VERY SWEET CHILD AND ONLY HAS ONE GOOD FRIEND AT SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THIS AND CAN NOT EVEN SPEND THE NIGHT WITH ANY ANYONE BECAUSE OF THIS. THERE WAS EVEN ONE LITTLE GIRL WHO SPIT ON HIM ON A REGULAR BASIS AT SCHOOL BECAUSE SHE SAID HE SMELLED. I HAVE NEVER ABUSED MY CHILDREN IN ANY WAY.  I HAVE A DAUGHTER WHO IS OLDER AND SHE POTTY TRAINED JUST RIGHT. SHE SEAMS TO NOT HAVE ANY MEDICAL PROBLEMS BUT MY SON SEAMS TO HAVE HAD A LOT AND NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK THIS IS A MEDICAL ISSUE. BUT I GUESS YOU ARE SO SMART YOU KNOW BETTER THAN THE DOCTORS WHO SPOKE ABOUT THIS ON THE SHOW TODAY. GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!

it is terrible that you are saying things that you don't know what your talking about.  i didn't see the show but was told by my sister to pull up the site and read it as it is what my son has.  we are a very well off family and i have three buitify children age 12, 6+5 and when my dad died two years ago this lack of pooping started with my 6 year old then 4 and is still going on today.  we have been to the specialist and nothing works.  he was normal with pooping everyday and now went for weeks without pooping and blew up like an ethopian and now still has these staining problems all because my father (his best friend) died.  and now you are blaming me for this??? don't you think that i want this fixed also.  not to mention having my dad back!

I am a mother of 2 and my son has encopresis.  His has not reached the level of involuntary bowel movements.  For you to say that these children are abused shows that you clearly need to learn more about this condition.  These children cannot help what is happening.  Sometimes we are given things in life we did not ask for.  I know my son cries and says, "Why did God have to give this to me?"  I feel sorry for you because of your lack of sympathy and desire to become more educated.

Its very upsetting that someone such as yourself would comment in this way.  You are obviously not a parent or have never had difficulties in life.  I have two children, one 7 and one 5.  My five year old has no problems using the bathroom but unfortunatly my 7 year old has encopresis.  I know that it is a medical condition as I have potty trained both my children the same way.  Your comment is very bothersome because you have no clue what children such as my son has to go through on a daily basis.  For the last two years he has every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday has to drink two bottles of magnesium citrate, chew 80 milk of magnesium tablets and everyday of the week have to take two adult doses of Mirilax, yes my 7 year old son has to do this.  Til this day we still have not been able to get him completly cleaned out.  His potty muscle is still stretched out leaving him clueless to when his potty is coming out.  We see a Pediatrition Gastronoligist on a regular basis and he continues physical therapy to learn to use that muscle properly.  We have even had him see a pysciatrist that specializes in this situation. It is a struggle everyday not only for myself and my husband but I always think of what my child has to go through.  Having to keep my 7 year old who is starting 3rd grade in a pull up that barely fits him any more and picking him up from school, smelling what has happened and how it effects his life is such a challenge that maybe you should keep your negativity to yourself.  These children are not abused,  they have a challenging medical condition that I wouldn't wish on anyone and for your own good, I hope you never have to deal with this situation, because you will feel horrible for even making such a comment.
