THANKS for your story!
Quote From: confusedincoloI am appauled to read some of the messages concerning this very delicate subject. How ignorant can some people be? Until you have walked in this couple's shoes, who are you to judge? My son is 9 and is still wearing a pull-up. He refuses to use the toliet and sometimes doesn't realize he's gone poop. This has been going on for so long that I can't tell you exactly when it started. I have taken him to Chidren's Hospital where they performed a go-litely which is basically a 24 hr enima to clean him out. He got so "backed up" that he wasnt even having regular bowel movements rather just leakage. After that the Dr.'s put him on laxities and Gycolax to keep his bowels clear. That lasted for about 3 months and we were back to the same old problem. I then took him back to Children 's and requested a, and I am going to spell this wrong, barrium enima because I thought may be something was just misfiring. That test came back negative. So now that I had gottent the medical questions out of the way, I thought it may be psychological. He was being treated by 2 different doctors for that. He has a tendency to shut down and then have these outburst. He was never diagnosed with this particular problem, but it can only make me wonder if this is not the case.
My sympathy goes out to all the parents struggling with this disorder. I know too well the emotional drain it can put on someone. And how frustrating it can be. Before taking him to the doctors I felt so embarrassed. He will be in the 4th grade and I am hoping that this is something that will just "go away". It's a constant struggle to make him sit on the toliet after dinner. I am a single mother so to have him do it after every meal doesn't happen.
I just wanted to share my story with you. I too am so surprised that people can be so cruel to these parents and their children. It's people like those that raise their children to be bullies and make fun of children who are different or experiencing problems. I am so glad these parents decided to share their story.......my best friend has a daughter (6 yrs.) that is having this problems and it has been going on for a year, maybe a little longer. I was so excited to call her and tell her about the show and give her a name for this disorder!! She had never heard of it either and she has seen her pediatrician several times with her concerns. Her pediatrician did say that the problem was with the child becoming constipated and then numb to the feeling of needing to go to the bathroom. To put her on a laxitive and not to shame or make a big deal about it. However, we could never understand how she did not feel or smell the poop in her underwear?? I was still baffled that she has been on this "medicine" for a year with not much of a change. The "medicine" seems to keep her regular but she still has "accidents". My friend trys to keep her regular but she does have "accidents" still, especially when she spends the night with us or maybe on vacation, etc. I sure wish Dr. Phil and the pediatrician would have given us MORE info. or steps to help with this, like how much fiber, what type of foods are best, etc. AND for all you people out there that think these children were not potty trained because the parents were lazy.....that is NOT true. My friend's daughter was potty trained for 2 years before experiencing the constipation that led to this problem. She has two older children with no "bathroom" problems AT ALL!! We are not lazy or abusive parents--if anything we are very loving and committed moms married to our children's very loving and involved Dads for over 13 years!! And because we are loving parents I hope all of these children improve and get the help they need so they will be spared from the ridicule and cruelty that other children with put upon them!!!
