Joan's problem

Quote From: jbbatwot

Could Joan possibly have Adult Attention Deficite Disorder?  ADDers are frequently disturbed by noises that irritate them: like chewing & smacking, pencil clicking, gum popping, clock ticking, etc.  I know, I live with one who can be extremely irritated by things that I barely hear.  Medication has helped a whole lot in our situation!

I too have the problem Joan has.  Smacking noises, loud or crunchy chewing, gum popping or smacking, loud MP3 players (just to name a few).  My family knows it bothers me and usually will stop before it irritates me too much.  I dont know if she has ADD, but I have panic disorder, and maybe she could have that.

I have to say, it feels great for me to read all of this because I have been dealing with the same things as all of these people.  I just so happened to read a book about ADD (to diagnose someone else!) and then realized it sounded just like me instead!  It mentioned that people who are disturbed by continuous noises (chewing gum, ticking clocks, etc etc...) and can't seem to move past them as if nothing else is going on in the room, are people who have the signs of ADD.  We focus on that one noise, and can't cope with it - I was floored!  I was not diagnosed with this, however it was a relief to read that the problems I've been dealing with my whole life may actually have an explanation.  My friends and family cannot understand why these things bother me.

Something else I can't stand is the sound of muffled tv noise through the walls, and snoring.  What medication helps your friend?!

There is also a hearing disorder where ALL sounds come into the brain with the same intensity so you can not distinquish individuals ones, you physically can't ignore sounds because they are there.  It has nothing to do with stress other then increased stress is an end result.    I was diagnosed with this as a child and they said I would grow out of it.   Never did grow out of it.   I can not read with any background noise, all conversations at all tables come into my brain with the same intensity so I hear conversations 2 tables away as well as I hear the one at my table.   I am assulted by noise from the time I get up until bed.  Unfortunately I have been told there is nothing I can do about it except wear ear plugs or noise killing head phones.   And neither of those work very well at all in work situations.   There are those of us out there for whom there is no 'background' noise it is all the same intensity as the person standing in front of us speaking directly to us.   We CAN'T tune it out and ignore it.   Dr Phil was much too glib when he dismissed the lady's problem with the noise problem.   Made me mad enough to bother register here and type this.   I am sooooooooooooooooooo tired of people saying 'just ignore it'.

Wow,  I am not the only person who has all these signs:  they all fit me to a T.

The clinking of a spoon against a bowl, is something that I can hear 3 rooms away, and send me over the roof!  Ice-chewing, I can't take it,  I literally have to leave the room!  Clocks ticking are soo distracting that it is the only noise that I focus on.  Windshield wipers with a noise are completely irritating to me.  Any repetitive noise, like someone bouncing a basketball right next to me, a pencil tapping, and gum cracking.  I have literally had to leave events, because I was stuck next to someone who was doing one of these activities.  I am CONSTANTLY telling me kids to stop making these noises.  My husband thinks I am PSYCHO and says that he CAN'T DO ANYTHING because I'm nuts.    I have been made to feel as though I am ruining the household because I also cannot listen to these noises.  It's something that pulls me right to that sound, and I become obsessed with it, even though I don't want to hear it.      What medication is there for this type of possible ADD (now that I know what I have)??     What a relief to hear that I am not just a psycho or a obsessive psycho!!

* Like many other viewers, I'm sure, having grown up among well-mannered people (not animals), I found the eating habits of Joan's family featured on Dr. Phil's March 6th show to be very unpleasant.
* Dr.PHIL:  What were you thinking by letting that slide? Your etiquette expert didn't seem to have anything to say about their unappealing lack of "manners" and consideration for their mother.
* Lack of consideration for their mother's position implies that they just don't give a hoot about her.
* Offering help for Joan to deal with annoyances did not seem to address their animal-like eating habits.
* I agree that we could all make efforts to deal with the unpleasant actions of others: however, with those annoying eating noises, I am VERY surprised that Dr. Phil did not seem to address the methods that her family members display in food consumption.
* Surely, Robin would not put up with that at her dinner table or TV.
***** JOAN:  Maybe you could do a video recording of each family member in those situations and ask how they would feel if their friends were to view them and their disgusting habits!
* Wishing you well mannered company at breakfast, lunch, dinner, TV time.         - Kathryn K. in Canada
