Quote From: mstraleyThere is also a hearing disorder where ALL sounds come into the brain with the same intensity so you can not distinquish individuals ones, you physically can't ignore sounds because they are there. It has nothing to do with stress other then increased stress is an end result. I was diagnosed with this as a child and they said I would grow out of it. Never did grow out of it. I can not read with any background noise, all conversations at all tables come into my brain with the same intensity so I hear conversations 2 tables away as well as I hear the one at my table. I am assulted by noise from the time I get up until bed. Unfortunately I have been told there is nothing I can do about it except wear ear plugs or noise killing head phones. And neither of those work very well at all in work situations. There are those of us out there for whom there is no 'background' noise it is all the same intensity as the person standing in front of us speaking directly to us. We CAN'T tune it out and ignore it. Dr Phil was much too glib when he dismissed the lady's problem with the noise problem. Made me mad enough to bother register here and type this. I am sooooooooooooooooooo tired of people saying 'just ignore it'.
We have a 9 year old and he is extremely sensitive to small noises. It is making life very difficult in our home. My husband does not understand and thinks that he uses this as an excuse to complain and bother his sister. I think there is more to it! I find it very interesting about your diagnosis .... can you tell me at what age you were diagnosed? I need to find help for my son.....
