Not only one illness

Depression can lead to real physical symptoms, and runs in families. Psychosomatic illness could be an explanation too with real symptoms without intent to be deceptive to doctors. Hypochondria is common too, and can be modeled by parents to children. Kids learn coping skills from their parents, so if Mom or Dad runs to the doctor or takes a pill every time the get a ache or cold so will the children.
