10/25 Policing the Parents

Quote From: nukemgrl

I'm sorry that you had to experience the hardships of dealing with an alcoholic, however, with a little research you will see that most alcoholics want to stop and most are ashamed of their actions and their alcoholism but are unable to do so without a lot of help.  Your instance may be different and the alcoholic you dealt with may not have wanted to seek help but in my dealings with alcoholics, it's like a moth to a flame.  They know it's bad, they don't necessarily like the taste but something inside them is not wired correctly to stop them.  With help such as counseling and AA, they can learn how to deal with the cravings and urges.  You wouldn't tell someone with Tourette's or OCD to just suck it up and knock it off, would you?

i agree with the person who says it's a choice. I also lived with an alcoholic for 22 years.  you say they are wired differently to stop themselves--- well a person with cancer or diabetes goes to get help and prays that the medication will work and an alcoholic chooses if they want help and they go get help when they feel like it. some go and get help and they "choose" if they want to stay sober.  a cancer patient doesn't get the choice to get well. an alcoholic chooses everyday to drink and i feel a person with a disease would do everything they could to get rid of the disease and get better so i do not believe it is a disease after living with an idiot for 22 years who chose to drink and lose his family. a cancer patient does everything they can to survive and hope and pray they will be with there family forever and alcoholic abuses their family and takes it for granted. they only care about themselves and blames everything or everyone around them for "THEIR PROBLEM"
