I bet Alex is prostituting herself because she so desperately wants love from a man, because she never got the love from her own father. I'm surprised they didn't discuss this point a little bit. And clearly the mother has not been perfect, but usually kids want to turn-out good no matter what their situation is. But this Alex seems self-destructive. I don't think she wants to live at all.
