Quote From: hollyguestI truly can not believe that people are assuming that because this young man is from the Middle East that is going to abuse her and hold her against her will. I'm not saying that it never happens, but abusive relationships happen in the States and every other country unfortunately. To assume that it will happen based soley on the fact that he is from the Middle East is racist and unfair.
I realize that he has called her some degrading and unacceptable names. I don't condone this. I'm not saying that this is the most healthy relationship, but the things that were said about his country and the fear from her family that he will "kill" her is unbelievable. If someone said that about an African American or Hispanic person here, they would lose their job. Why is it okay to make these statements about the Middle East?
I don't think that Katherine's mother is assuming that she's in danger just because this guy is from the Middle East. Don't you think that it's pretty extreme that he was calling her abusive names before he even met her and that she thought that was perfectly acceptable? Don't you think that its kind of weird that this guy's father snuck her out of the country at his own expense when she was only sixteen and he had never met her or her family? Doesn't that sound just a little suspicious? Plus she ran off to live with some guy she doesn't know other than over the internet and phone calls. That would be scary and creepy even if she did it in this country.
Add to that the fact that she's now living in an area where car bombings and other violence are a routine occurrence. What mother wouldn't be worried about that?
This girl has no money of her own and obviously not much common sense either. She could easily get trapped over there and not ever make it back to this country. If she has any sense, she will take Dr. Phil's offer to get her out of there. But it's up to the girl now. She needs to go now while she still can.
