The reason why I say yes to cell phones is because I was living in NY for 9\11. Even though my daughter was to little for one then I was devasted that I couldn't get in touch with her. Now that I live in VA my daughter has had several bomb threats in middle school and now in high school. The school never tells you anything and you are worried about your child. How do you wait to hear from your child until they get home or some one lets them use a phone to call you. Yes they are bother for alot of reasons but in case of an emergency they really do need them.

Wow! You guys are pretty harsh! Yes parents should absolutely monitor their kids but once they're teenagers it's much more difficult particularly when it comes to computers. What they did was wrong but they're kids and kids do stupid things. Even a judge wouldn't think that someone saying or writing "I want to kill you" means you'll actually do it.. I really think the parents who are trying to sue are WAAAAAAAY out of line. What are they suing for? Is their kid genuinely damaged by some stupid comments written by hormonally overwrought girls? Honestly! The girls have apologized and done their community service and they don't seem like gang members or anything. Let it die! How will their kid feel if they manage to financially destroy another family? THAT will have much longer lasting impression than the foolish comments posted online.

I am glad you share my views.  I have had some come on here telling me I am far too judgemental!  Parents need to be parents.  They need to be aware of what their kids are up to and to set limits. They need to teach their children that there are consequences when they do something wrong. They need to teach their children to respect others and to understand how others feel.  These are the things I taught my now "twenty-somethings" when they were children, and neither ended up being the type that got in trouble and both have many friends and are doing well in life.

 I think you are being entirely too judgemental and extremely defensive, because someone had a different view.  Yes, I do think the girls deserved to be punished, but for the parents to lose their house.  I think that is way extreme.  Also, the parents of the girl that was victimized is not doing much to get past this.  It sounds like they are reliving it everyday with this lawsuit.  I think it is time to try to heal and move on.  My daughter had a so called friend that got a hold of her my space password, and filled her my space with terrible names and accusations.  This so called friend acted like her best friend the whole time of this nightmare, it wasn't until we contacted the police and they were going to investigate, that she fessed up.  Don't care for the girl much, however, what purpose would it served if I sued the parents and tried to take their house?  Thank God, my daughter has moved on and hopefully learned a valuable lesson.
