01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: thatrabbit

Since when did it become right or fair for anyone to tell you what you can wear, unless it's a parent and a young child. There are so many more important issues that people should be trying to resolve. If the males are not going to be allowed to wear baggy jeans are they going to stop women from wearing short shorts or skirts, low cut tops, or pants that are too tight ? We all know some women who should not be dressing this way do, at least the males are covered up and don't have any body parts hanging all out. A female can just as easily hide a weapon in her shirt as a male can in baggy pants. I think if you see something you don't like look the other way instead of continuing to look. I know this show hasn't aired yet but I saw the previews.

The problem is that the males are not covered up.  When a fellow should wear size 34, and instead he wears a 42, with the crotch down to his knees, it is easy for his friends to de-pants him in the hallway or cafeteria or gym.  There is a rule now in the high school that I attended that the third time your friends drop your drawers and your colored underwear go with them, you have to start wearing suspenders.

I know it's funny.  The local high school insists every year they have to buy a dozen or so more suspenders.

I think it is very wrong for the government or anyone to interfer with what a person wears!!!

I have a 10 year old son that went through a short time where he was wearing his jeans way low with his boxers showing.  He was wearing his older brothers clothes so that he could have "the look".  I did not like it and my biggest fear was that his pants would fall down in the middle of school and he would be embarrassed.  I knew it was just a temporary fashion statement.  What people need to remember is not to be so judgemental.  Kids are going though so much and so much peer pressure now a days.  I think wearing their pants this was is just kids trying to fit in somewhere.  They are trying to fit into a fashion statement.  Wether or not it is a good look or not. Needless to say my son went to rock climbing camp and wore his baggy jeans with his boxers showing.  I told him that morning that I wouldn't recommend him wearing them to rock clibming camp.  Of course he did.  Well,  guess what story I hear when I picked him up?  You got it!  His pants fell down at camp.  I think that was one of the last times he wore his pants that way because he got embarrassed.  I totally agree there are way more important things the government needs to worry about then what people wear.  WHO CARES!!!  It is up to each individual to decide how they want to dress.  We have freedom of speech but not freedom of dress?  How silly is that.  My son choose not to continue wearing his pants so big because he realized cool wasn't that cool when your pantsf all down.  :)

If I wanted to wear a kkk outfit or a nazi uniform you would probably think differently. I understand these are beyond the limits of baggy pants. The excuse for wearing baggie pants is all self serving and does not take into concideration what others think. This country is losing its class. Some of you feel you should not be "judged by your appearance. WRONG. I judge all day who I associate with, and lots of other judgement calls. Many of you dont believe you stareo type. YOU DO. When the Oklahoma city bomb exploded that building alot of you first concluded arab extreamists. Many of you didn't. Lets be honest. Did you think a man did this? of course yo did. I don't like making laws against this. And at the same time I don't have to look at this. Then again as an employer I don't have to hire you either. "For every action there is a reaction"

I'm amazed that, without actually having seen the show, you were able to hit the nail so squarely on the head.  I don't feel any government agency should have the right to legislate how people dress.  If some are so offended by the apparel of others, I can only suggest that they not look at what offends their delicate sensibilities and ask themselves why they are allowing themselves to be so offended.  As I was watching the show, I noticed that one of the women on stage was wearing a rather large silver cross on a chain about her neck.  That silver cross could possibly offend a few people.  Perhaps there should be a ban on wearing any religious jewelry in public.  After all, someone, somewhere might be offended by it and we all know that religion has often started wars.  See how ridiculous things can get?  If one kind of attire is deemed offensive and is banned, then any attire which offends anyone can be banned.

The problem is not with the baggy pants.  The problem is with those who have nothing better to do than attempt to dictate to others how they should dress.  There are so many other more important issues with which people might concern themselves.

YOu have the same debate I have. If government is going restrict baggy pants, then they have to restrict  to short dresses, skirts, shorts and too low cut shirts. Outfits with the stomach showing or butt cheeks. All these things are things that everyone is not ok with.

I think government need to try to deal or be more concern about more serious issues like drugs, gangs, overcrowded jails, education, homelessness.

What do they not have anything better to discuss, but the way some kids are dressing. I think it's ridiculous.

HMMMMMM...you saying for them to grow up and get a job?????    They are teenagers, they are growing up and they will grow out of the phaze once they get out of school/collage  and start appling for jobs. I think they are more covered up than some women who wear super mini skirts and show their thong.

I don't think the government should have to tell people what to wear, but since parents don't seem to have the authority to make sure that their children pull their pants up, then maybe the government needs to step in.  The father on the show who wears his pants low and allows his children to do likewise, stated on the show that there is nothing wrong with it, becase as they grow up their pant swill be pulled up.  Ok!  Well we can all assume that he still has some growing up to do since his pants are still not pulled up.  It's one thing for them to wear their pants that way, but I don't think that most people like to look at these boys underware.  That's why they are called UNDERWEAR.  They are supposed to be worn under your clothes.  Also, I think that someone on the show made a statement that it's comfortable.  How could that be considered confortable?  You have the underpants on the waist and the pants under your butt, while walking with both legs apart, inorder to keep the pants from falling.  If it's comfortable to have the underwear on your waist, why not have both the underwear and pants on your waist?  I think this is so disgusting to look at.  I don't know which Idiot came up with this nonsense, and then find a bunch of idiotic followers.  I am certainly glad my son is grown and does not find it necessary to dress this way.  Also, it makes them look like thugs, and yes they can easily hide weapons under those baggy clothes.  Could they walk into a business dressed this way and get a job?

Yes, some women/young girls need to cover up also.  This is only the flip side of the baggy pants.  I would put both dressings in the same category.  That father on the show needs to stand up and set an example and set some boundaries.  That's what being a parent is all about. Not joining with the kids and giving them their way, knowing that it could eventually be to their detriment.  Teaching your childrent to dress this way, will not give them the know-how to dress properly when they are ready to go for an interview.   However, to each it's own.  I just don't want to look at peoples underwear........and most of them look extremely nasty anyway.
