01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: bigron

Hi Dr. Phil,  I would consider myself an educated person brought up in a good setting by my 2 great parents.  I am a 36 year old white male.  I have very strong opinions on this issue.  First of all I do not think it is strictly a race issue.  Baggy pants are part of a variety of different cultures, I AM VERY SAD TO SAY.  Second of all,  baggy pants has a direct impact on my shopping experience.  I probably do not shop as much as I should however when I do explain to me why I can never find the correct waist size at stores.  I have an answer.  this is because every one of these individuals who choose to wear baggy pants are wearing my size pants.  A 36 inch waist.  They deplete the stores inventory and I can never find my size in stock.  I full y support a ban on baggy pants. I think parents need to step up to the plate and monitor the cloths that the kids wear.  It is unacceptable.  Message to the baggy pants people.  You look ridiculous.  You are ridiculous.  Grow up get a job and look presentable, not like a hoodlum.  The joke is " I wouldn't worry to much about these people running from the police they would trip." The bottom line is people who wear baggy pants present themselves as uneducated, no parent supervision and most of all look like an idiot. If they spent half the time looking for a job as they did by pulling up their pants I guess I wouldn' fault them.  Don't hand me this garbage " I need to express myself." Grop up get a job and look professional.  Please ban baggy pants.  I guess this is worst of all.  These baggy pants people are the future of our country.  Help Us Dr. Phil.

So, basically you want laws to enforce dress codes to make sure everyone is presentable according to your standards.

Let’s say I see an old lady with a huge woolly red and green santa-faced Christmas sweater, or a big, ugly, neon orange floral dress. Should I be able to ban ugly patterns and ill-fitting shoulder pads because I think that they make women look "ridiculous"?

How will police even enforce this? How baggy is too baggy? Will the police measure the amount of bagginess? I've seen guys wear pants about five times too big, (I don’t even know how they get them to stay up) and I also know guys who get just a size or two bigger, so they have slightly baggy pants. Will the (hypothetical) law cover only REALLY baggy pants, or will anyone get fined for daring to wear their pants a size or two big? What if I'm feeling sick and I want comfortable, baggy pants and they're too baggy? What if some people just don't like tight pants?

I just wonder how people define these baggy pants. My boyfriend wears pants a size bigger just because he doesn’t want them too tight on his waist. They’re not really, really baggy, they’re only slightly baggy. The word baggy sounds weird after a while when I think about it a lot.

Yes, people need to choose their own clothes.

You were right when you said that "I think parents need to step up to the plate and monitor the clothes that the kids wear."  Right - THE PARENTS.  NOT the government. I'm a 37 yr old white FEMALE- one of the people that ordinance is trying to protect.  If you don't like the way they look- DON'T LOOK AT THEM. If you are in a position where you could hire them or not for a job- DONT HIRE THEM.  You sound like an idiot when you bitch about not being able to find your size- THAT'S RIDICULOUS- ever heard of the internet? You can order anything you want. When I was young, we wore oversized clothes, sweaters backwards, & sweatshirts inside out.   It's fashion & young people need to express themselves that way.  At least they aren't getting tattoos that they will regret.  They will put on suits for jobs when they need to - I did. I am a pilot & flew for United Airlines.  I cut my hair & proudly wore a uniform when the time came. Until then , I expressed myself & I am better for it.  I don't complain about inane crap like you & the other people who are just mad because they always dressed like their mamas told them to.

After watching the Baggy Pants show, I'd have to say that some of those folks need to be much more concerned about children seeing how incredibly rude they behaved! Seriously.  I mean, occassionally people get carried away (although, it is usually over very personal and very emotional issues that they are dealing with), but I found it to be utterly ridiculous that a bunch of adults couldn't have a civilized conversation on national TV. I am also a bit disappointed in you, Dr. Phil, for allowing them to treat you and your show with such disrespect.  Honestly, I don't see that much got solved by the very obnoxious discussion. I certainly wasn't enlightened by anything I heard.  What a shame.

And one other thing......  why was the discussion focused solely on the boys and baggy pants? Because, I have to say, the only thing about so-called "fashion" that I dislike more than boys in baggy pants, are girls with their thong showing!!! UGH!

Thanks for letting me vent!

I understand what you are a saying, for I too have never liked the look.

I first saw the look of baggy pants hung way down below the waist when I worked as a youth correctional officer working with teens out of control about fifteen years ago.

I didn't like it then simply due to the fact that the boys that were a doing this were the ones simply looking to score with our girl wards...ages of kids at center?  7-17 years of age.  Another name for correctional center...Juvie...

So we had a standard rule that pants that were found to be displayed as such...we could write the boys up...and enough write ups could land them into lock down...

About ten years ago, the guy that I was a dating, high school age son, decided that he wanted to wear this same look and started buying jeans that were two to three sizes bigger than himself.  His dad and I thought that he was just a wanting to fit in with the other males at his school.  Or a wanna bee, Black kid when he was white.

We later discovered that it was just his fashion statement, for he also took to a wearing several boxer shorts under his jeans...kind of the layered look, you know?

Now ten years later, a style that I had hoped would die out...I am now a seeing my teenage grandsons a wanting to wear them that way as well...

I am also a wondering if being they are baggy, that perhaps for the skinny boys, they might look bigger and for the large weighted boys, perhaps sort of a camouflage look...I don't know...I still don't like the look and yes, I understand about you not being able to find jeans your size...for my ex boyfriend had a large time keeping clean jeans around due to his son a wearing them as well.

As for the part about allowing governmental control over the problem.  I am totally against it...we need to understand that lots of things we can handle without allowing our government to do so...because before one knows it...it will be nothing but a government control state of affairs...

Those are my thoughts

Love, Light and Peace

Tonie

They are rediculous?  Come on, that's a pretty immature statement for a thirty six year old to make.  For all you know they could be completly kind, rational, intellectual, and sensible people in those pants. You can't just judge them on the premace of what they wear. [I know a lot of people do, but, hey, I'm sure you are smarter than that. =D.]

Listen, I don't enjoy the baggy pants fad, but I respect an individual's right to wear them. The government is gradually stripping us of our liberties, and, no offense, but it's people like you- who want govermental officials to step in and forbid people to do things that they should be free to do- that allow that to happen. If we aren't carefull, America could turn to a communist society, and the next thing you know, people aren't going to be allowed to wear shirts with crosses because people are offened by them, anyhing involving a racial remark, or a "politically incorect thought" will be eliminatedand all in all the United States, a place where life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness is upposed to be granted to every man, and woman in the nation, is going to come with it's on dress code- and, mister, in a society like that, clothing articles would be the least of our problems. =_=;.

We have no right to tell other human beigs what they can and can' wear in the same way as we cant force them to feel as we feel or express themselves in th way we want them to.  If a peson wants to wear a certain article of cloathing, let them wear it, man! =P. It's not like they are hurting anyone. The bottom line is, though we may not all like the way it looks on others, or ourselves, what someone wears is the individual's decision, and the rest of us should just deal with it. So long as no one is doing, or selling drugs, robbing banks, vadalising property, or hurting anyone physically, we should just let them be. By learning to understand and respect even the smallest differences between one another, we are closer to acheiving the eternal dream of peace. :3.

>>>>>And, for God's sake, sir, you can just go one size larger, and purchas a belt, or just shop online. [The internet is magical that way. ;D.] The world isn't going to implode if a store runs out of size 36 pants. xD.

                                                                                                                                                                  You're buddy,

                                                                                                                                                                            Liennin.

[I am well aware, also, of the fact that my last sentence ruined the overall appeal of my comment. x_x;.]

So let me get this right you want to band baggy pants because your shopping experience has been some how intruded upon. That is the most ridiculuos reason i have ever heard for taking away someones rights.

I agree with bigron, i find that the "gothic" people of this wolrd might worship the devil and I DONT LIKE IT!!!But do i have the right to tell them what to wear?  NO NO NO NO they have the right to wear what ever they want to they bought and if THEY LIKE IT, I LOVE IT.  You say that you CONSIDER yourself to be an educated man but if you are educated then that education should tell you that just because their pants are saggin does not mean that they are not educated what you see is not always what you get.  I have two teenage boys and they like to sagg thier pants and i allow it to an extent but they are BOYS not MEN!! There is an old saying that goes like this:  "when i was a child i behaved like a child but when i became and adult I put away childish things" Let these children be children go an find somethin else to do with your educated time.  DONT HAND ME THIS GARBAGE!!!!!! BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!!!!!!

I think that what you claim about people buying up your size pant is just plain silly.  Stores should be looking at what is selling and stock a larger amount of that size.   I'm a female and I have on many occassons been to stores that are out of my size because it is an average female size.  If the store is out of your size they lose your buisness. Why not just tell the store that you often find them out of your size and would suggest that they stock more of that size.  However a ban on baggy pants would be a complete waste.  It is not a government issue.  This country is slowly pulling away freedoms left and right.  What next, I won't be able to wear my hair up because it shows to much neck.
As for the future of the country there are far worse things going on, like students in ablilty to think for themselves.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! not one thing you said in this post sounds intelligent! have you ever stopped to think maybe people don't like the way you dress and they wish they could ban you?! i am 31 years old, (not sure why it matters, but since you specified, i will too - white) female, married, with 2 children, and never once has a person wearing baggy pants ruined a single shopping experience, kept me from going out in public, or made me worry about what my kids will say if they see someone's underwear!!! you are judging a book by it's cover and that is shallow. now, let's talk about some other types of clothing i would like to have banned (please let me know if anyone agrees so that we can start a petition and maybe we can eventually pass a law so that the whole united states must wear a uniform): banana hammock (a.k.a. the speedo). now that makes me uncomfortable and nauseous - no matter the body type (or color)! thong bikinis - they show the whole ass and that is something i DO NOT appreciate my children seeing! oh, how 'bout poufy sleeved shirts - i have yet to see ANYONE who looks good in those! and half shirts that show belly buttons, and short skirts/shorts that show butt cheeks, and push-up bras - my kids really don't notice clevevage yet (they are both boys), but my husband notices and i'm sure we would have a better relationship if other women weren't parading their boobs in public! i can go on and on. does anyone agree that the idea of banning these types of clothing sounds ABSURD?! well so do people complaining about baggy pants (and the 36 yr old white male who doesn't shop as much as he 'should' because baggy pants make him sad -poor guy!)!!! why are our elected officials waisting our money, their time, and public resources to make a law about how we can dress? what about health care? what about homeless people? what about the war? what about our economy? i can go on and on. and how would those people who support the ban on baggy pants feel if we were trying to ban you from wearing your big boy panties, your 'showing way tooooo much in the front' tight pants, or the sexy clothes that ALL heterosexual males find attractive on a tall, beautiful woman (or would you propose a ban on sexy clothes for.... let's say.... short chunky women?) THIS IS AMERICA PEOPLE!! those of you who want a ban on ANY type of clothing make me sick - maybe you can move to a country where they don't allow so much freedom - i'm sure you'll have a much better shopping experience.... and maybe even find a 36in waist!!!

Hey I agree with you ALMOST ALL OF THE WAY I think that guys that wear baggy pants are UUUGGGLLY and I think that they do look like someone from a gang and so forth I REALLY don't like seeing guys wearing things like that BUT and that is a big BUTT I still don't agree with telling them that they can't wear it just because I have that opinion about them well that is the way I am and maybe other people feel that way too but if they don't care enough about the way they look to maybe pull up their pants they would rather look like bums off the street well then that is their problem really BUT I DO NOT like what woman wear either and they discust me as much as those guys wearing their pants down low I  mean what kind of woman has no respect for herself that she has to walk around exposing everyone to her body her private spots we don't care if she got breast implants and is proud of them or got some other surgery to her body that she wants to show it off that is AS DISGUSTING to me as guys who wear baggy pants we don't want to see your underwear but I REALLY agree that that is better then woman showing their BARE SKIN HELLO I would rather see a guys underwear then a womans breasts or other part of their body so why don't they make a rule that everyone has to wear one piece swim suits no more wearing shirts that show the belly button whether you put your arms up or not no more tight pants or really short shorts or skirls that show off their underwear all shorts and skirts have to be to the knees or longer, whenever they should make a rule that if a girl where's pants that are too low and  they lean down and show their underwear they should automatically get a ticket because those things I said above about woman are just offensive to me as guys who show their underwear actually in a way more offensive to be honest you probably get my point so all I am trying to say is they shouldn't make a rule about that unless they want to make a rule about other things as well and just not give people the right to choose what they wear

I have two sons, 45 & 38. Neither ever dressed so poorly. I agree it is totally disgusting. When I was a young girl, some boys wore their pants below the waist line but not below the cheeks of their butts like today. If people who don't have kids would stop telling parents they can't correct their kids, the problem would be less. The one dad  shouldn't say they will grow out of it since he also said he likes to wear his like that. Not grown up yet I guess. I want to pull up boys brenches everytime I see them with the pants nearly at their knees. Right on, will fall do to those baggies, so police will catch them. My husband has hard time finding his waist size also.
