10/07 The Latest Debates

Quote From: lori50

Someone on the show said that breast feeding was a natural act so it should be allowed in public.  My reply is that there are many natural acts that are not allowed in public.  Workers on a local construction crew were ticketed and had to go to court for urinating in public.  They had their backs to anyone that could have viewed this act so nothing was actually seen.  How is this any different? The breast feeding mom said that she couldn't wait until she got to someplace private to breastfeed.  She was going to fulfill her sons needs immediately.  How is this any different for the workers who are sometimes miles from the nearest bathroom and have the urge? Sex is also a very natural act but no one is allowed to do this in public.  I do not see any problem with excusing yourself to a private place to breast feed.

Urine is dirty, unsanitary, and smelly. Breast milk is not. Men are adults who one would hope have learned to control their urges. Babies are not. Babies can't wait for a bathroom, either, that's why they wear diapers (unless the parents to EC, but that is fairly rare in this society). Babies don't have any concept of time. They don't understand the need to wait when mom is right there. That is something they are not *capable* of understanding until much, much later. My 3-year-old now knows she can't nurse in public, but she has learned to wait. When she was 3 months, I did not expect that of her.

Urinating in public is against the law.
Having sex in public is also against the law.

Breastfeeding in public is not only NOT against the law, it's a specifically protected right in many states.

That's how it's different.

I do not see any problem with you excusing yourself to a private place if me lawfully feeding my baby upsets you.

I'm amazed at the number of people who equate breastfeeding mothers to men urinating in public, or to having sex in public.  I've seen many people whose eating habits are so offensive, it would be nice if THEY were relegated to a private place in order to eat.   Infants have a right to be fed when they are hungry, not when it's convenient for the the sensitivities of the rest of the world.

Let's look at this scenario:  A woman with three children enters a restaurant.  One child is 4, one is two, and the youngest is 3 weeks old.  The father is serving a tour in Iraq so the mother is there alone with her three children.  The waitress has just brought them their meals when the infant wakes up needing to be feed.  How is the mother supposed to fulfill the needs of the infant if she can't feed her baby in the restaurant?  Is she supposed to make the child wait while the rest finish their meal?  Should she be forced to let her food get cold while she feeds her baby?  What about her other children?  Should they take their food into the bathroom so they can eat while mama feeds the baby?

If you find breastfeeding moms so offensive, I do not see any problem with excusing yourself to a private place while she takes care of the needs of her infant.
