Skeptism Is Your Friend
Personally, I don't know which is more shocking. That someone can lie like that or that someone lying like that is believed.
Both Matt and his wife should have been embarrassed to the point of curling up on the set and melting into a quivering puddle of shame. The fact that neither did is just pitiful. He's so sick he seemed not to understand how transparent his lies are and she was happy to play the victim when she should have been mortified with the depth of her own gullibility. And the couple in the audience seemed to have beamed down from outer space and I'm guessing went out after the show and adopted the first street person/nuclear scientist that they found sleeping on a park bench.
The fact that any of these folks could show up on a TV show demonstrates just how delusional they are even now.
I find it hard give any of them a break.
Skepticism is sadly lacking here.
Speaking of skepticism, lie detector results are very, very questionable. There are good reasons that they are not admissible in a court of law. I continue to wonder if Dr Phil actually gives them the credibility he pretends to. I can only hope he is more skeptical than that. They do make for a good tool sometimes to con these liars into admissions. But sooner or later, trust in them will bite him in the butt.
I think I've heard on the show that lie detectors are 94% accurate. Even if true, that's not good enough , not in court and not when any important matter is be decided based on their results.
I guess my point is that lies and liars are common. And blaming all the bad consequences on the liar is only part of the story.
