02/15 Living on a Prayer

Quote From: vicksin1

As soon as I saw this show begin an old joke I'd once heard kept running through my mind...  There was a man who lived in a house near where a river has flooded.  The authorities came to evacuate the neighborhood but the man refused to leave telling the officers, "The Lord will provide!  He'll see me through."    The water rises to where the man had to go to the second floor of his home at which point rescuers came in a boat and told the man to get in the boat and they'd take him to safety.  Again the man refused and said, "God will provide, he'll see me through!"  The waters continued to rise and the man had to go to his roof because the water was now that high.  A helicopter came and they begged the man to please let them take him to safety.  Again the man refused saying the same things.  He drowned.  When he got to heave he met with God and asked, Lord, why did you let me die?  I thought you'd save me, thought you'd see me through!?"  God looked at him and shaking his head in pity and said, " And who do you think sent the authorities, the boat and the helicopter?"   God is sending these people help via Dr. Phil.  In all that have asked for it, Dr. Phil has chosen them to  bring on this show and he has resources that the rest of us have prayed to have access to.  They'll get their help but I somehow doubt that they'll see that it was God who has sent them the gift of Dr. Phil's intervention.  Nuff Said...
This little joke is so funny but so very, very true.  Dan needs to stop relying on his own interpretation of events and "God's will," and ask for insight from others.

The whole episode, every time Dan said something about "God will provide", I kept wishing that Dr. Phil would repeat that joke.  I mean, the "keep rowing for shore" line was good, too, but this joke is so perfect for the situation.  He's twisted it all up, confusing God's will with lack of action.

What about "God helps those who help themselves"?

I doubt that any one, including Dr. Phil, on the program was able to reach Dan.  Did you watch his face?  He had a smug, know it all expression.  He believes that he knows what God wants and the rest of the population are ignorant.  As for taking money from family, as far as he is concerned those are gifts from heaven.

I worked with CPS in Cal. for many years.  I doubt very much that they would do more than check the children's living conditions.  Living without electricity, running water and other amenities is the way our forefathers lived.  Hard life, but hardly abuse.  As long as the children have shelter and food.  I would hate to see the authorities come in and just grant him and his family welfare.  That would add to his belief that the Lord will care for him and his family.

He uses home schooling for control.  That is not anything against home schooling.  I had experience once with a cult and he has that same smug attitude that those people had.  I'm surprised he hasn't branched out into forming a cult.
