Prison Doesn't Fix a Thing

Quote From: gwarrior6

It's very scary to know how many sex offenders live next to you!  There are about 170 in the 10 mile radius from where I live (I need to move).  There's about 20 that live half a mile away!  It's a shocking reality check, thats for sure.

You can find out the # of sex offenders that live in your area, their names, addresses and pictures from the the family watchdog site:

http://www.familywatchdog.us/

What to do when the jails are so overcrowded that these sociopaths are free?

I work for a prison and I'm here to tell you that locking up these offenders does not take away their drive as predators once released.  Another problem is that most Americans are under the impression that sex offenders "have" to register when released from incarceration.  They are TOLD to register but many do not.  It's going to have to be up to each individual to know their surroundings, know their neighborhoods and keep themselves safe.

Sex Offenders, and people who share and make child pornography don't get punished severely enough so that in no time at all they are out ready to take over the neighbourhoods, god help us.

Maybe if more women were in charge of making the decisions instead of mostly men who sympathise with these characters, the punishment that is offered might be enough to scare them straight.  Hmmmmm?

Yes it is scary but at least in the states you all can somewhat know where these creeps are , here in Canada were not allow to know.   The most they do here is if they let out a level 3 offender they give a very veg idea where they released them.   The only time we find out exactly where they are in through private people investigating.   I want your system here.  sex offenders should be locked up for life.

What to do when the jails are so overcrowded that these sociopaths are free?

Therein lies another complicated can of worms.

What to do about the jails? Well, I think we need to rank and organize our priorities. I gather that there are lots of people who are in prison because they were caught with a few ounces of pot, or they stole a can of Coke on their third strike.

So, the first thing I'd tend to do would be to decriminalize and then carefully regulate drugs. Now, don't get me wrong, I hate drugs, and I detest druggies. But, I'd rather have them inside the tent whizzing out, than outside the tent whizzing in, so to speak. If you could get the non-violent drug users out of jail, it could free up a lot of room (and, I imagine and hope, it would put a lot of drug dealers, drug cartels out of a job).

Then, I'd do pretty much the same with prostitution, using Amsterdam as a model.

Then, since I brought it up already, it probably would make sense to either strike "three strikes," or make it more sophisticated, less black-and-white, and more discriminating.

Then--and this is really, really complex, complicated, and tricky--I'd say that many things ought to be done about poverty, and  especially education. People need to feel as though they have real options in life, and they have to have the tools and the knowledge to be able to seek out those options. No doubt this would take a lot of sweat, money, time, effort, planning, and tears, and I honestly don't quite know where to begin.

In the end, the goal should be to separate the hardended, irredeemable criminals and really violent types into one pile, and the relatively benign and the presumably redeemable people into another.

But, of course, I've made it all sound easy, which it isn't. If it was easy, it already would've been done!

People are so mis-informed

I think before people start judging others they should be more informed to know exactly what they are talking about.  A sex offender is a human being whether you want to accept that fact or not. And "sex offenders" is not even the right term to use because many of them have only offended once and yet they are called sex offenders as though they will always offend.  And as far as labeling people, why don't they have labels for drug addicts, drunk drivers, and other felons who can harm our children?  Why do we squirm at the word sex offender?  We squirm because we hear all the "bad news" about those few who are sick and who would offend again and again.  So does that mean we should treat them all the same?  I don't think so.  I think the law is so unjust when it comes to so called "sex offenders."  It is bad enough that they can't find anyplace to live, and that they have to register, but for the police to send out fliers to the community is not only wrong, but it puts the person and their families in danger. How many people have been harassed or killed because they find out a "sex offender" has moved near them?  Maybe you don't even care and think it serves them right.  But you do not even know them or the story behind their arrest in the first place.

I have children and grandchildren and my heart goes out to those who have gone through some horrible experience because of a sex offender.  But they are not all the same.  And many are never given a second chance.  They have to die with that label.  And no matter what their story is- behind all the hysteria- some have been punished more than anyone should ever be punished.  Some have never seen their grandchildren because the law prohibits any contact whatsoever with children and this is for all sex offenders, whether they are pedophiles, whether they offended once, whether it was a 19 year old that was turned in by a 17 year's old mom, or whether they were drunk and urinating and someone saw them and turned them in.  There are way too many reasons why people are labeled sex offenders and to treat them all the same is totally unjustifiable.

And do you really feel comfortable knowing where they all live?  Can't this give people a false sense of security?  Sex offenders of all sorts are walking around every day.  They may be someone in line in front of you at the bank.  They could be someone you had a nice chat with at the grocery store yesterday.  They could be someone cleaning your carpets. They could be anyone you come in contact with on a daily basis.  So what now? Do we register where they  work or what they do for a living? Wake up, people!  We have normal everyday people who can have a clean record and all of a sudden may wind up killing, raping, or molesting someone.  What parents and the community needs to do is take care of their children and do the best they can to keep them away from all danger.  We will never have a perfect world.  We are all sinners.  That is how it will always be.  We cannot go on picking on one class of felons and make them our main focus.  I wish the world was safer for our children, but it is not. We  will always have drunk drivers, killers, rapist, burglars, drug dealers, and all kinds of law breakers no matter what we do.  I just wish people knew more about sex offenders before they classified all of them as being evil or being sociopaths.  I feel sorry for those who can't see what they are doing as being totally wrong.  And I feel sorry for those who are so ready to cast the first stone.  I sure wish Dr. Phil would have talked to me for this show.
