My nephew is also in an ABA propgram. His Mom has been attending parenting programs for autistic children and there are also courses through the Geneva Center and community colleges as well for parents, caregivers, and support workers.
BTW Ontario is hoping to close down its institutions. That is primarily why support services received a fair amount of funding last year in hopes to open more group homes and family care services.
Great that your nephew is in ABA - that's the key. I personally have not had a lot of luck or value from the Geneva Center - but it's been 5 years since I've been there. When I say institutions - I do mean group homes in the mix. My boss (who has a lot of $$) had to put his child in a group home because he was too violent. This is what I am fighting against. And I'm winning, I think.... I envision a life where my son lives with me, learns a trade (or maybe surpasses my expectations, and has a career). Either way, it's a hard road but I'm committed to meeting the challenges. Don't want him in the care of others, at all.
Thanks for the response.
