Bipolar Disorder

Quote From: marthapax

My 16 year old step son has been diagnosed with ADD and bipolar.  His 18-year-old brother has enlisted in the Marines, and now he is upset and down because he thinks he can never serve in any branch of the military like his brother because of his having to take medications.
I am afraid he will not be able to go into the National Guard because of this. We try to be as encouraging as we can, but he somehow just thinks he is no good and is a failure.  We tell him every chance we get that he needs to focus on the good things he can do, and people with handicaps do have to work a little harder, but opportunity is out there.
Does anyone know if it is possible for someone to serve in any military branch having been diagnosed with bipolar?  I know he has limitations as to what he can be assigned to, but I really think he would apply himself if he were allowed to enlist.
hello, i do not know for sure if people with bipolar can get into the military or not but my 15 year old son was diagnosed with bipolar and i think the 3rd, doctor that treated him asked my son what he wanted to do with his life and my son told him that he wanted to go into the army and his doctor said that the militay does not accept people who have a mental illness, and then he said "the last thing they want to do is put a gun in the hands of someone who is mentally unstable". i was upset at his comment. like i said this may just be something he said in attempts to get my son to try to straighten up or it may be fact, maybe someone else reading your post will have more details. take care
