Visualize an elderly patient walking down the hall; holding on to a handrail that has been touched by someone with MRSA on their hands.
I don't know where the myth comes from that hospitals are the most sterile place........that is where all the sick and infected people are. People let their children run barefoot and roll around on the floors in the waiting room. No matter how good the housekeepers are it is only clean until someone comes along and leaves more bacteria there.
foam on!
One thing that aggravates me is that the patients are often TOLD they have MRSA and that they are in isolation. Yet, I've worked in places where they just wander on out, go to Walmart or even to other pts rooms. What do you do when you can't "lock them up"?
A year ago, you heard about that man (from Georgia?) that had a nasty form of TB and was TOLD to stay in isolation and not go anywhere (I think his father in law actually worked for the CDC). Where did he go first? He boarded a PLANE with recirculated air to go on his honeymoon as planned! He should have been charged with criminal neglect and in prison (in an isolated cell).
