Great question! The definition of hardwired is "genetically or innately determined". I don't think anyone has proven this is a genetic condition. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.....there is no proof either way. So my option it's not hardwired is just as valid as someone who believes it is hardwired.
It is kind of like alcoholism. It is thought maybe it is genetic because it seems to run it's course through families, but no one has found an actual gene yet that they can say 100% will predict someone will become an alcoholic.
