show me the money, the prophet's profit

Quote From: carolina50

The news programs and several talk shows have been covering this story.  No one talks about how this cult pays for multi million dollar homes and the huge temple and support for all the children and wives.  I know it's not just from donations.  Are our tax dollars supporting this cult through welfare and food stamps.  If my taxes are paying for this cult to the tune of millions and millions of dollars - were do I go to sign up to start my own government funded religion?

No your tax dollars are not supporting the cults through welfare and food stamps. There is no way those mulit million dollar homes and huge temples are built with TANF checks. Yes, many of the "wives" are on those services and thats all they have to survive on. They are not being taken care of by their husband or even the group itself.  However, the big homes and temples are built  through essentially slave labor. Groups like this one have businesses. Memebers work in them with out the benefit of a paycheck. The profits go to the prophet, in this case Warren Jeffs. If a member works in a business that is not owned by the group then their paycheck is turned over to the leadership. Sometimes there are variations on how this is handled. In the group I was in some of the big wigs got a take or a portion of all the business dealings, that did not include  skimming off the Sunday morning offering basket or direct donations and offerings.  Bottom line is the leadership has everything funneled to the top, while those at the bottom sacrifice and do with out. It was a sweet life for  the likes of  Warren Jeffs, Ferris Miller and Jim Jones  and miserable for everyone under them.
