Spanking: Useful or Cruel?

Quote From: cindyburd

I was disappointed with Dr. Phil and they way he handled this woman. She admitted what she was doing was wrong and yet he kept hammering her for what looked like sensationalism. I know what she felt like as I lived her life. Only after my children became adults did I seek help and come to the full realization of the damage I had done. Now I see the dysfunction I passed onto them on a daily bases and it saddens me.

Spanking is NEVER ok especially from anger. It demeans the child and as Dr. Phil says, it changes who they are. Once spanking becomes the norm, they child develops ways to manipulate the situation to keep from being spanked. All trust and honesty is gone.

Dr. Phil never has enough time to really "get real" with his guests.  It takes a lifetime (childhood to adulthood) to become an abuser, it cannot possibly be changed in only a few minutes on a TV show.  I know someone who was on his show a few years ago and I can attest to the fact that he does MANY follow-ups and makes SURE the person he has consulted on the show is "towing the mark."

We don't know how much intervention was done before the show with this woman.  We also don't know what happened during those interventions.  It could be that until the show, she was not willing to admit her problem.  We also don't know what happened during the commercial breaks when he continued to speak with this couple.

Remember, if it wasn't for a little sensationalism, we wouldn't have watched the show in the first place.
