09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: ohines

It seems to me that there isreverse racism going on. Blacks can use N***** in their songs and raps but Whites aren't supposed to say it. Where's the logic in that? If they can use it about themselves then they shouldn't get all in our faces when we or anyone else uses it too.

Besides....aren't there more important things to work on in this world of ours besides the use of a word?

You know what if a black person goes and jumps off a building are you going to do it? Didn't your mama teach to be a leader not a follow? For all the people that say blacks use the N-WORD on each other, if you took the time to listen to what is said you would know that blacks say ( what's up n***a not n****r) so get it right. I feel that if anybody wants to use the word in the negative way then you are the true and real meaning of the N-WORD. Look it up if you don't know what it mean. The world have changed whether you like it or not move on with the present and for those who wants to living in the past do something with your life. Go read a book or something so maybe you will become smarter then what you are know.

I think it silly to even have this discussion.   No one changes their mind or their mouth about the use of this word.  It is what it is.........it will be around until the end of time just like cuss words.  We choose to say it or we chose not to.   We have that freedom.

I am not saying that it is okay for Black people to call each other N******; however, their is a diffrence between Black people and white, chinese, and latino people saying the word. Now, the diffrence is as simple as this... we are black, the word was made up by white people to offend black people. I have never heard a white rapper say the N word in his lyrics because it would be wrong for him to do so; however, I have heard white rappers calling one another words that are meant to offend white people. If you have no need or urge to say the N word, why waste your time wondering we you can not say it.

I agree with you when you say there are more important issues to worry about in this world.  Like that fact that we have a bunch of white people complaining about it being a problem to use the word.  Does it really mean that much to you to be able to call someone a n***** that you are going to whine like a little kid about the fact that blacks don't want you to use it.  First of all you I agree that no one should ever call another person a n***** or a bitch or a hunky or anything else that isn't nice.  It goes back to preschool when you were taught 'if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all'  The fact is its a negative word and it will be negative when anyone uses it, but for a white person to say it about someone they usually don't have the same intentions when blacks use the word casually among there selves.

By commenting on the message board on the use of the "n" word, you are doing exactly the opposite of what you suggest we should do.. focus on more important things besides a word. A non-black person could never understand why Black people feel the way we do. I do not agree on use of the word at all; although, many Black people use it among each other without any intended negative connotation. The reason that is not the case for white people is the history behind the word. Imagine your child in a store acting unruly... talking back to you, kicking you from the cart, etc. & another parent witnesses this behavior. Because this parent has witnessed you scold your child before, (public/private) he/she gets nose to nose with your toddler & scolds him telling him how bad & unruly he's behaving. Would that be okay because you do that to your child? Or, is it inappropriate because it's not their place? Imagine your husband/wife has heard you call a sibling an annoying b**** & says "Hun, that annoying b**** is on the phone again"? Is it ok because you have said it before? White people want Black people to "get over it" only to make themselves more comfortable on the issue of race. It will not be over until whites stop believing adulterated propaganda created by the media of the dangerous, scary Black people... or until I can stop being pulled over by police& not hear "Do you have any guns, knives, drugs, or large amounts of currency?"... or until White people across the board receive the same sentencing that Blacks receive for the same crime... or until there is no need for quotas& affirmative action for us to get an equal opportunity for employment... or until white people get ticketed in proportion to Black people for minor traffic offenses... or until white people (who make the majority of serial killers and pedophiles) can concede that as a race, Black people pose no more of a threat than they do... When that day comes, Black people will have nothing to get over. :)

I'll explain the logic...when you're with your friends and/or family, I'm sure you can say pretty much anything thing, use any word, phrase, even an insult. But, when in public, or with someone else's family, you would not say those things...Why? Because it may come across as rude or disrespectful. The same is with the N-word, it is a word I, as a Black woman use with those closest to me, and there is no malice behind it, but I don't use it in public, even with other Black people that I do not know, because I don't know if they maybe offended. It is the same with other terms, like redneck, or cracker...there may be White people that use the word freely amongst themselves, but I would never use it towards them, because again, they may feel disrespected..And...you're absolutely right, there are more important things...but this is the topic of conversation.

Words are what communication is based on. In rap songs yes, the word is often used. In most cases the word is used in the context of "friend" or "dude". I say dude because I once used the word but myself and my friends have replaced it. Why because others don't understand how we were using it. That is just like how women refer to each other as the B-word but if a man does it the meaning is different.

Yes, I  agree that there are more important things to talk about. But, in response to your comment about Blacks using the word n***** in their songs. That's a generalization. They are not our songs as you say. They are the songs of ignorant, selfish individuals, who exploit their own people. Besides, why don't you pose that question to the record company owners, many of whom are white. I often wonder if these same rappers wanted to use other degrading racists slurs, such as those directed towards whites or other non-blacks, would they permit it? I doubt it. And yes, Def jam may be owned by Russel Simmons, but as aforementioned some blacks will exploit there own mother to make a living. Lastly, although Blacks can be prejudice, as long as the current non-black power structure controls the wealth, means of production, and political system in this country, We can never be racist. To be racist is to have the ability to impose

your standards of beauty, religious beliefs, economic policies, political ideology, etc, upon another group.
