09/12 The N-Word Debate

Quote From: ssenippah

I feel the exact same way and here's why.  Last week my Grandson and me were driving to town and this african american lady in front of us just stopped short for no reason at all.  I slammed on my brakes and the lady behind me did the same but veered around her and blew her horn at her.  As I went around her she screamed out of her window  'YOU WHITE TRASH".  I was mortified.  I could not believe she yelled at me and I did not do a dang thing.  More so, for what she said "WHITE TRASH.  My Grandson could not believe his ears.  He said Grammy M, what is wrong with that person?  I said "honey I don't know maybe she had a really bad day.  I did not want to get into the racist  thing with him.  He is 13 years old and knows about these things but I refused to let him show how much that made me angry.  He said that was a terrible thing for her to say to you.  I said yes it was but that's how some people are I guess.  I wanted so very much to get into detail with him, but chose not to.

Then, standing in line at the grocery store, this african american person age approximately 28 said to her friend, these white crackers are going to be in for a big surprise when Obama becomes President.  That was not the first, second or even third time I heard that remark.  Now, that is as far as I am concerned very racist and  even more frightening.  I have heard other people say they've been hearing the same thing.  I am a Democrat but let me tell you something as horrible as this is going to be for me, I am voting for McCain.  I truly do not want to do that but on the other hand, Sara Palin is fantastic from what I have heard about her, saw her speech on the RNC.  I actually wanted Senator Clinton for President but Gov. Palin as VP works just as well.

Anyway, yes, this N-word thing is absurd.  What about us white people beling called white trash and cracker?  Should we become offended and start a White coalition group like the NAACP and when we are called names we have someone to run to?  I am not prejudice just really angry and concerned about the state of affairs this world is going to.

Dear Miss Granny M

I read your entry and I will be honest at first I was outraged by it.  Why? Because when you used your examples of how blacks have treated you—you choose ignorant people and situations.  I wish I was in the car with you because I too would have thought those comments were totally uncalled for.  BUT have we all had those incidences where someone has said something unwarranted to us, whether it be a black white .   That kind of incident is universal and you better believe its totally wrong.  To take a more personal offense because it was a black person perhaps you should look a little deeper into your heart.

I also wanted to speak on your innate fear of a black man (half white man) becoming the president.  I find it interesting that you would allow ignorant people to sway your vote for president. The most powerful vote we have.  The way you put it, it seems as if you think these people (in fact all blacks) have a personal relationship with Obama.  He will now right the wrongs of all black folks in the country because these people have said so.  I certainly do not personally know him.  I certainly do not think that its on his agenda is to “get whitey.” Or as the ignorant people put it “Wait till Obama gets in office whites will get theirs.”  Oh really? If you were looking at those comments on a logical level you would know how absurd those kinds of statements really are and please view the source it comes from.  Instead it invoked some kind of fear in you—you said it your self you decided to vote for McCain.  What?

Bush has made life difficult for ALL and I do believe Obama wants to right those wrongs and make it better for ALL.  There have been hundreds of black people in power on many levels in this society.   I have yet to hear any of them us their powers to “get whitey”  Did they burn down your home, did they lynch your husband, did they take away your businesses and your home, did they separate you from your family? No, (they) called you white trash in a stupid childish incident that anyone could see they were wrong.   Why are you concentrating on the few negatives and dare say ignorant people when there are so many blacks striving to simply have a better life for alllllllllll—yes including themselves.  I wish I could name them all for you but there’s not enough space on here for that.   In fact for the most part they push for equality for ALL, peace and everything in between.  I am so sure you wish that for your beautiful grandson.

As for your grandson I wish him all the best because if this country continues to move in the direction it is four more years of Bush McCain he soon will be in some type of service fighting for this country or a cause that has been proven to be a lie and god-willing I pray he comes home to you whole and alive.  I have several people I love over there (yes black and white ) and one hasn’t come home alive.  I am proud of all the service men and woman because they are doing things I don’t have the ability to do honestly.   They lay down their lives for their country regardless of how they personally feel. They lay down their lives for black people for white people for asians etc.  They lay down their lives so we can have this dialog.  Now that’s is amazing to me.

BTW I don’t do think you’re a racist at all I think you are just a misinformed and even a little scared of change.

So I say all this to say Miss Granny M don’t hate—participate.

Change your view and you will change the world.

With much love to you Miss Granny M

From a Black woman in New York just trying to be me J
