(Original Air Date: 04/21/06) Being a parent is hard enough, but what happens when Mom and Dad can't agree on how many kids to have, how to raise 'em and how to get ‘em to sleep?  Sometimes, it can lead to an all-out baby war! Matt's baby battle ended up in front of a judge and made headlines. He was ordered to pay child support for the baby he had with his ex-girlfriend, but he says he shouldn't have to cough up the money because she told him she wasn't able to get pregnant, and he told her he didn't want to be a father. He, his attorney, and the director of the National Center for Men discuss the lawsuit they filed, known as “Roe v. Wade for Men,” arguing that men should have a constitutional right to avoid fatherhood. Next, Dan says even though he and his wife, Lisa, already have four children, he wants just one more. Lisa has been pregnant on and off for 11 years and says she's closed for baby business. Will Dr. Phil help Dan see Lisa's point that four is enough? Then, a frustrated husband is camping out on the roof of his house and living in a tent. He refuses to go back to his bedroom until his wife moves their kids out of their bed and starts paying more attention to him. Can Dr. Phil get him to come down the ladder? Plus, a sleep expert has a simple method for getting your child to sleep through the night. See the plan in action! Share advice and talk about the show here.

Adoption Rights

Quote From: powers009

You do have a point. Now here is another one what about the men who tell the women if you get pregnant I won't leave you I will be there for you and our child then the moment she gets pregnant it's this baby isn't mine you are a whore and you have slept with every Tom Dick and Harry around. Then he says abort it and the woman doesn't the baby is proved his and there you go. That happens a lot. Men just say those things to get in her pants and once they do and the obvious happens they want to run because they don't want to pay child support. I have no sympathy for this man if he did not want a baby he should have never done what 100% of the time causes one. There is no such thing as a 100% effective birth control device other than abstinence. He seems like an intelligent enough man. Child support isn't about the person you had sex with but the person you produced because of having sex.
Don't adoption rights extend to both biological parents?

Personal Responsibility

In my case, it was my mother who didn't want a child yet, and I was conceived on my parents' wedding night. They each had a child already. "Abuse" doesn't even begin to describe my "punishment" for intruding in Mom's life. Indifference would have been a blessing. I do not believe this man should be forced to be father to a child he was assured would not be created in the first place. I am a straight, married feminist who believes will not be equal until the law is equal and fair for both genders and for gays as well as straights. It is nightmarish to force a child to live with being unwanted by one parent forced into financial support only while loving same-sex couples are denied adoption. As for the other problems on today's show, spouses: please let poor Mom stop at four kids, give the guy back his private bedroom with his wife, and I hope those young parents get their sleep in order.

04/21 Baby Wars

Quote From: greenpeas

This man is angry about the money involved and he made that plain in the beginning.  When you play a game like sex you know the rules of the game.  The child is here, and because this man will not deal with his child he now goes to the media to try to keep his money.  The one guy does not even have children.  This child will know that her dad fought against supporting her and does not want her.  That alone is a crime.  What kind of man does that?  I am so thankful though that he is getting the media involved as now for all of his life we can know what kind of person he really is.
AMEN!  That poor child did nothing to deserve the pain her immature father is putting her through!

Men do have a choice.

I am the mother of 4 boys and have always told them that they are responsible for what happens when they choose to be sexually active.  The prospect of being a father is the least of the concerns in today's world.  Every boy/man should be using condoms EVERY TIME they have sex whether the women is on birth control or not until they are married and make the choice to have a baby.  Once they choose not to use a condom they have made their choice to suffer the consequences.

Birth control of any variety is not infallable

Sexual intercourse evolved/was created as a method of procreation, and it is very good at it.  Any time a young man engages in it he has to be prepared for the possible consequences.  If he had worn a condom and it malfunctioned he would still be liable for the outcome.  Leaving it up to the girl is just plain stupid.  People do stupid things all of the time, and they have to face the consequences of their actions.  If he had slept with the girl and had contracted AIDS from her, saying it was her fault would not  cure him.  She would not be liable for his medical bills even if she swore up and down before intercourse that she was clean.  If he could PROVE she knew she was infected he might possibly be entitled to some damages, but if he can't prove the girl was actively engaging in deception he's up a tree.

Well maybe the women sleeping with these guys would do better and wait until they are married before they decide they want to have sex!!!  Thereby eliminating the whole problem with the father!  Hello ladies!!!!  Get your heads right!!!  Stop giving it up to people you are not married to and the problem is solved!!!!!!!!!!!  Communication in a marriage, a good marriage, will prevent this crap from happening.

baby wars

I am suprised that anybody, man or woman could deny such a precious gift from God.  This baby was in Gods plan for your life and the childs.  This man hasn't even held this precious little girl.  Why not???? Is he afraid that he will fall in love with this child in the kinda way only a parent knows?   Quit being selfish and grow up..........Every child has the right to know their biological family.  This child will be an adult one day and could get sick and need an internal organ.  That is why God made the child flesh of your flesh, so that you could be there for him/her.  What ever happened to genuine Christian values?  Parents need to raise their children with good values so that when they get older, they will not think like this very selfish man thinks!    And for the mother......I have total respect for you, you are doing the right thing and your daughter will thank you for it in the long run.  Please instill your love and support into this child enough for two parents, since that is what you have become.  I am proud of you........Good luck

Husband on Strike

I think parents need to have a place without kids. I try to make are bedroom a sanctuary for us. No toys, very, very limited time with kids in bed (i.e. a couple times a year). The nursery is next door to our room, so there is only 5 feet 6 from my bed to the crib (with a wall & 2 doors inbetwen). When our two boys (now 6 and 2) were newborns, I left the doors open. Now I keep them closed.

After each child was born our marrige had a rough time. We recently began focusing on each other again. I realized that I had stop making my husband a priority. Since I started making him a priority not only is he happier, but he is making me happier and both of our kids are happier. I had been struggling with our 6 year old, but since we started making our marrige a priority his behavior has gotten much better and he is laughing a smiling more. There is no doubt that having a happy mom and dad makes the boys happy too.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Quote From: esbradford

Men have more choices than they realize.  Put on a condom, don't have sex.  There are two.  If a man has sex without a condom regardless of whether his partner says she is on birth control or can't have children, he is responsible for what happens after that.  If he can't take the heat, stay out of hte bedroom.    What saddens me greatly is that someday Dr. Phil's guest will want to take part in his daughters life and she will see what a jerk he was and he will lose out on a lot more than the $500 a month he's losing now.  And I don't think $500 is even enough if you figure in medical expenses, food, clothing, shelter, diapers, wipes, crib, carseat.....
Next thing you are going to be advocating is allowing me to have the right to make the decision on what should happen to my unborn child!!  Women will have to let a man decide (THE SPERM DONOR) on if their baby should be aborted, put up for adoption, or whatever decision is convenient to the man.  M en do have choices as the above stated...put on a condom!  Quit being a loser and take responsibility for your actions!!  THis beautiful baby is nothing but a pawn in Matt's battle to prove he as a man has rights!!  He has shown nothing but the fact that he is NOT a man!!!

Totally on Matt's side

I'm so tired of men being the villian and women the poor victim in these situations.  Would people be accusing the girl of having "unprotected sex" if she had not been taking the pill while Matt used a condom?  It's considered protected sex if one person is using a reliable form of birth control; and the pill is usually 99.9% effective.

I agree with Matt.  He was misinformed if not out and out lied to by the girl about her chances of getting pregnant.   He was not given any choices down the line about abortion or adoption.

It's the woman who has had all the choices, so if a she decides that she is going to have sex before marriage, not get an abortion if she gets pregnant, and not put the baby up for adoption then she should also decide to support that baby herself.  Otherwise, she just might want to get married before she starts having sex.  Marriage is the tried and true, time honored method of finding out if a man is committed enough to a woman to bear his children.
