(Original Air Date: 04/21/06) Being a parent is hard enough, but what happens when Mom and Dad can't agree on how many kids to have, how to raise 'em and how to get ‘em to sleep?  Sometimes, it can lead to an all-out baby war! Matt's baby battle ended up in front of a judge and made headlines. He was ordered to pay child support for the baby he had with his ex-girlfriend, but he says he shouldn't have to cough up the money because she told him she wasn't able to get pregnant, and he told her he didn't want to be a father. He, his attorney, and the director of the National Center for Men discuss the lawsuit they filed, known as “Roe v. Wade for Men,” arguing that men should have a constitutional right to avoid fatherhood. Next, Dan says even though he and his wife, Lisa, already have four children, he wants just one more. Lisa has been pregnant on and off for 11 years and says she's closed for baby business. Will Dr. Phil help Dan see Lisa's point that four is enough? Then, a frustrated husband is camping out on the roof of his house and living in a tent. He refuses to go back to his bedroom until his wife moves their kids out of their bed and starts paying more attention to him. Can Dr. Phil get him to come down the ladder? Plus, a sleep expert has a simple method for getting your child to sleep through the night. See the plan in action! Share advice and talk about the show here.

It should be equal!

The US laws on Children and Divorce are out of control and only favor the attorneys and NOT the child.

Woman should not be able to hold men responsible if they have lied and deceived the man.

They should not be able to withhold a child from a good man who wants to be a father either.

Too many woman want a child and not a husband and will do ANYTHING to get one and then put the screws to the man.

well that's silly...of course I've heard "my body, my choice" but why should that mean the mother's "choice" is automatically the father's "choice"...my point is that the courts don't force motherhood on women...why should they on men?
Emphasis on the what choice does the baby have?

Maybe the woman can refuse to have sex with him unless he wears a condom. Isn't that one of the things Pllned Parenthood teaches them?
now we're talking.. I guess we can dream.

If you play, be prepared for the outcome

In my opinion, I think that what that gentlemen is trying to prove is wrong.  If you and your girlfriend decide to make the decision to fool around you should be prepared for the consequences.  If you do not want to have children you should use precautions or just not have sex.

This is no way to set an example.

Men who don't want kids...

I think it was hard to watch this man sit on stage and just act like he had no part in the conception of this beautiful little baby girl!!!  If she didn't think she could have kids, and she does get pregnant, any responsible, loving, caring, man would step up and take care of his child.  She on the other hand, of course, isn't going to give the kid up, or abort it.  It is devastating to hear that you are not able to have children, and then to get pregnant... she was probably overwhelmed with joy!  If this man doesn't want a child, but wants to have sex, he needs to get the operation, and then this is not a problem.  When he is ready to grow up and stop being so selfish, if he ever is, he can have it reversed!!  As far as the lawsuit goes, I feel it is very upsetting to think that any man out there that doesn't want a child that is born, can just go to court and bastardize the child with whom he created.  And he has it easy... $500 a month doesn't come close to what is actually costs for her to raise his daughter.   All I have to say to him is GROW UP!!!

Men Have a Huge Choice

Men absolutely have a choice when their girlfriend gets pregnant, they can choose not to be involved in that child's life.  Sure, they may have to pay child support, but basically their child is adopted with a monitary commitment that is fair considering that the woman is going to completely take care of the child in every other way.  Sure, women have other options, but if they choose to have the baby, basically it is their responsibility for the rest of their lives.  Men just have to pay for the woman to take care of the baby.  When you have sex, you take that risk, and you have to be willing to deal with the consequences.  And it is absolutely fair to say that a law like this, every single man who doesn't want the baby (any man who ever pays child support who doesn't have a role in their child's life) would be able to say they didn't want the baby and get away with it.  It may not be fair, but it's right.

No..only women can do that!!  They can abandon their responsibilities without persecution...why can't he?
Oh.. wait a minute...??? Men can't abandon their responsibilities without persecution?? I don't think I applied for a visa lately.. no.. I am still in America... and you know what? Men do that every single day.

Baby Wars

Hi Dr. Phil.....I enjoyed the show today...I'm a woman and I just wanted to support   Matt and his legal pursuit to have his rights changed....I believe that both parties made it clear from the start that he did not want children and she couldnt have any plus she was on the pill for health/medical reasons so she has tricked him into the birth so shoulkd not be responsible as he was an unwillining participant.......I hope he wins his case and the system changes...men should be entitled to the same rights as what a woman receives...........Patricia

want a way out?

Becoming a father is an awesome responsibility.  But, if the man wants the "choice" to opt out, he can file a motion with the courts to "terminate parental rights"......NOT be given a loophole for dead-beat-dads to use as a way to get out of paying child support !
