This girl was 18 years old and said she had been tanning since she was 14. Do the math 400 hours over 4 years is 100 hours per years. She also stated that she used an accelerator when she tanned. I recoginized her lotion and it is made by Designer Skin. They are a member of the ITA (indoor tanning association) and a supporter of the International Smart Tan Network.
The average tanner doesn't tan every day...infact they only tan a couple times a week to keep the sunkissed glow. If her salon is a crediable one they have talked to her about using a water based (not mineral oil) moisturizer daily at home. Funny Dr Phil didn't touch on this!
The following bits of information are found at my tanning salon's web site ... www.Mimistanningshak.com

Why tan in a salon?
Today, all sun-beds and tanning booths used in salons are regulated by the F.D.A as Class II Medical Devices. This means you only get a standardized amount of UV exposure with a mixture of both UVB and UVA rays designed to minimize burning.
The controlled environment and the ability to time your UV exposure to the minute makes burning less likely with a tanning bed than with outdoor sun exposure.

What are the positive effects of UV light?
While indoor tanning is a cosmetic service, a well-known side effect of exposing the skin to ultraviolet (UV) light is the production of vitamin D. Emerging evidence suggests that there may be an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency in North America. Research also suggests that vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining good health. In light of this evidence, the Indoor Tanning Association believes that the health benefits of indoor tanning deserve further research.
Europeans started tanning indoors with sunlamps that emitted ultraviolet light as a therapeutic exercise to harness the positive psychological and physiological effects of UV exposure. Long before the first tanning facility was established in the United States in the late 1970's, the practice of visiting a “solaria” for the positive effects of UV light was widespread in Europe, particularly in the sun-deprived, northern countries. Although indoor tanning is considered a cosmetic exercise in the United States, the industry’s roots are therapeutic, and many Americans do in fact visit tanning facilities for that purpose.
The science of photo biology, which studies the effects of light on life, was founded on studying the positive effects of sunlight. Indeed, the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physiology/Medicine was awarded to Dr. Niels Finsen for his work treating the disease lupus vulgaris with ultraviolet light. While the indoor tanning industry in the United States promotes its services for cosmetic purposes, the fact remains that exposing the skin to ultraviolet light is the body’s primary means of producing vitamin D (which in turn is related to positive physiological effects). Exposure to UV light is also responsible for the production of endorphins and serotonin (which in turn is related to positive psychological effects).

Oh NO! Don't Tan Dry!
When you tan without lotion your skin dehydrates, starts to look older, wrinkled, and damaged. You may not see the results right away, but aging and damaged skin is NOT the result you want out of your tan! Why chance it!
Using a lotion while tanning in a salon is equally important as when tanning outdoors, but operates on a different premise. While tanning delivers the highly desirable color and relaxing benefits that tanners seek, it can be very drying to the skin.
Moist skin tans best! But you have to be careful what moisturizers you use .Throughout the tanning process, it is very important to use an accelerator or intensifying lotion that is specifically formulated for indoor tanning. To replenish the skin with moisture and nutrients after tanning use a hydrating and skin-repairing moisturizing lotion formulated with ingredients essential for proper skin care and to help achieve a healthier-looking, longer-lasting tan. Indoor tanners should diligently and carefully apply these lotions both before AND after tanning.

Ever wonder why here at Mimi's we say, "No! You can't use that product here?"
MINERAL OIL CAUSES CRACKING OF OUR BED ACRYLICS
If mineral oil is bad for our beds........ IMAGINE WHAT IT IS DOING TO YOUR SKIN!
Bluntly stated: mineral oil and petroleum is bad for skin. (Baby oil is PURE mineral oil.)
These products are known for their bleaching ability. Ever wonder why gasoline is often used to remove paint? Ever wonder why artists use mineral oil on their brushes? Ever wonder why mineral oil is often used to clean tools? It's because it whitens and releases grease. It strips your tan and whitens your skin.
Mineral oil causes your skin to suffer increased photo-aging effects when exposed to sunlight. (Plus you will burn faster when using petroleum products...and a burn is not a tan), Mineral oil isn't absorbed into your skin because the molecules are too large. They sit on top of your skin, clogging your pores, not allowing your skin to absorb water (moisture), and it magnifies light.
Why do you think tanning lotions and good moisturizers are made with natural oils from food and plants instead of mineral oil from petroleum?
For example: take a cracker and put it in baby oil. What you will see is the cracker remains unchanged, it does not get soggy, but in water it falls apart. Then take a prune or raisin and put it in mineral oil, and you will see that they remain unchanged, but, if you put them in water, they will absorb the water and plump up.
Mineral oil is man made from crude oil...you know, the same stuff they make gasoline from. Mineral oil is a byproduct from manufacturing when they make gasoline. Why would you want to use it on your skin?
It is CHEAPER for manufacturers to use these byproducts as a filler. 98% of all cosmetics use mineral oil, including your eye shadow, blush, lipstick, shaving cream and your everyday moisturizer and lotion you use at home. It is also used in most SPF sunscreen. These products increase the photo-aging of the skin...and we wonder why we keep looking older, why our skin continues to dry out, even with all the products we use?
Your skin wants water and other natural moisturizers - not petroleum products!
